Following the release of lead hit singles “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” and “16 CARRIAGES,” the world was awaiting the release of “COWBOY CARTER” — Beyoncé’s eighth studio album — with bated breath. It seemed that the album would mark a distinct shift to country music, breaking from much of Beyoncé’s previous discography, which has included genres such as R&B, pop and house music.

On a busy Thursday night on Arts Grounds, the student-led, annual New Works Festival opened with resounding success. Produced by Associate Drama Professors Dave Dalton and Doug Grissom, students performed five original works written, directed and designed by their peers. Each play had the audience laughing out loud and holding back tears with shows about relationships among friends, family and even PTA members.

The Golden Globe Awards kicked off the Hollywood awards season Sunday night with the first major event since the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The strikes — which shut the film and television industries down from May to early November 2023 — were meant to gain better working conditions and fair wages for actors, writers and other union members. Much of the world was excited to see stars walking the red carpet on the heels of these successful strikes.

After a nearly five-year-long hiatus from releasing music together, Friday saw the highly anticipated reemergence of indie group boygenius with the release of their new album “The Record.” The group — created by solo artists Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — previously released one self-titled EP in 2018, leaving many to wonder when their next batch of songs would come out, if ever.
