By the end of first year, I knew I was done with University Dining forever. I simply couldn’t spend another year with the Newcomb salad bar or the O’Hill fries. I had heard about the Corner Meal Plan from a few people and know myself well enough to determine that I was going to be eating out more than cooking, so I bought the plan at the beginning of second year and haven’t looked back.

As a server, there are few things more frustrating than getting a table that acts like they have never eaten at a restaurant before in their life. Customers like these can be difficult, time consuming and rude without even realizing it because they don’t understand the norms of the restaurant. The next time you eat out, follow these tips and hopefully you can make your server’s dinner rush a little less hellish.

When it comes to restaurants in Charlottesville, I have no doubt that Peloton Station is the first of its kind. Peloton Station is a self described “cycle centric tavern and bike kitchen" on 10th Street. If you are just generally confused about what a biking restaurant looks like in practice, don’t worry — you are not alone. This week, I headed over to find out what it was all about.

Every student at the University knows that the food scene in Charlottesville cannot be beat, but don’t let the fear of better options paralyze you into taking your parents to The Virginian for the third time.

Ah orientees, so young, so innocent. I remember when I was in your shoes, assuming 150 plus dollars would last a whole semester and genuinely thinking that first O’Hill meal wasn’t so bad. Well trust me, you won’t stay this naïve for long. Before you know it you’ll be eating half of your meals on the Corner and the other half in your room. It’s just a fact of University first-year life. Hopefully after reading this article you will have a better idea of what you should buy to make sure your dorm kitchen can live up to its full potential.

It is common knowledge that the best way to rehash every detail from last night is over brunch with friends. It is less widely known that the best place to do this is right by the University on the Corner. My hallmates and I ventured over to The Pigeon Hole to see if it could fulfill all of our “Sex and the City” fantasies.

It has officially happened — I have reached my breaking point with the University Dining. Something changed after spring break, and the usual salad bar and peanut butter toast — I so diligently ate every day since the beginning of the year — now seem intolerable. Luckily, I have the best roommate ever, who has the best mom ever, who took us to a much-needed dinner at Oakhart Social last Friday night.

J-Petal is a dessert shop that has recently opened in Barracks Road Shopping Center. Serving Japanese crepes, Thai ice cream and specialty drinks in light bulb shaped glasses, there has definitely never been anything like J-Petal in Charlottesville before.

To the naked eye, Milli Coffee Roasters may seem like any of the other countless coffee shops in Charlottesville, however, after spending a rainy Saturday afternoon there, I can guarantee that it is better than most.

One of the most important lessons I earned from the process of sorority rush is about brunch. After making small talk for hours on end, it has become clear to me that every single person loves not only eating brunch, but also talking about brunch, giving brunch recommendations and sharing their sweet or savory preference. It is not only the most important meal of the day, but also the universal equalizer in any conversation.

When it's too freezing to even consider dartying, I suggest hopping on the free trolley and making your way over to Albemarle Baking Company on Main Street. It's the perfect outing for a Saturday afternoon — far enough away to feel like you're escaping Grounds, but not as long a bus ride to downtown Charlottesville.

Fall is finally upon us, and a hot drink in your hands is the best solution to the cold temperatures. If you agree, but are not basic enough to walk into class with a venti pumpkin spice latte, don’t worry — there are tons of alternatives close to Grounds.

With the months-long Bicentennial celebration underway, alumni point to the people, memories and traditions that made the University feel like home. However, one University trademark often overlooked is the food in Charlottesville.
