No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse outplayed rival Virginia Tech Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium, using a powerful second-half run to lead the team to a 15-10 victory. After only having a one-goal lead at halftime, the Cavaliers (11-5, 6-3 ACC) opened the second half with a 3-0 run to break the game open against the Hokies (9-8, 3-6 ACC).

After a slow start in the first half, the Cavaliers (4-0, 1-0 ACC) could not be stopped in the second half as sophomore attacker Rachel Clark led the charge with seven goals.

Virginia women’s lacrosse opened its season last weekend with two victories in California. The Cavaliers started off hot with a 14-11 victory Friday over No. 14 Stanford and then followed their success up with a 16-12 win Sunday over UC Davis. Virginia faced a deficit in each game but was able to come back to win against both the Cardinal (1-0, 0-0 PAC-12) and the Aggies (0-1, 0-0 Big West), ensuring a flight back to the east coast with an unblemished record.

Appearing in its 29th straight NCAA tournament, No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer will begin its run for a national championship Saturday evening when it takes on Fairleigh Dickinson for the second time this season. After being knocked out of the tournament fairly early as a No.1 seed last season, the Cavaliers (13-3-3, 6-2-2 ACC) are hopeful to advance to the College Cup this season.

No. 8 Virginia took on a struggling Miami team who was looking to close out their season with a marquee win Friday night in Coral Gables, Fla. However, the talented Cavaliers (13-2-3, 6-2-2 ACC) spoiled senior day for the Hurricanes (5-8-3, 2-7-1 ACC) with a 1-0 victory. After an early first-half goal, the Cavaliers used a stellar defensive performance on the back of senior goalkeeper Cayla White which propelled them to victory.

The Cavaliers (10-2-2, 3-2-1 ACC) were unable to close the game against the Orange (8-5-1, 1-3-1 ACC) as the match ended in a 2-2 draw. After facing two straight top-five opponents in Duke and Florida State, this matchup against the Orange had all the makings of a trap game for Virginia, and the Cavaliers delivered a frustrating performance with crucial mistakes plaguing the team.

After Hurricane Ian postponed the matchup from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, No. 2 Virginia came to Durham, N.C. ready to play, scoring an early first half goal to overcome the No. 4 Blue Devils 1-0 in a top-five matchup. The Cavaliers (10-1-1, 3-1 ACC) used their stingy defense and outstanding goalkeeping to hold the powerful Duke (8-3, 3-1 ACC) offense to zero goals despite the Blue Devils’ numerous scoring opportunities.

No. 2 Virginia women’s soccer returns to the pitch Friday night in Durham, N.C., where they will take on No. 5 Duke. Last time out, the Cavaliers (9-1-1, 2-1 ACC) defeated ACC foe Louisville 2-0 at home with two late goals from graduate student forward Haley Hopkins and junior midfielder Alexis Theoret. Friday night’s match, however, will be a step up in competition as they face a tough-minded Blue Devil (8-2, 3-0 ACC) squad who can control possession and get shots on goal.

Saturday at the Carrier Dome, Virginia competed against a reeling Syracuse team who came into the game losing four straight games. The Cavaliers (10-3, 5-1 ACC) defeated the struggling Orange (4-9, 1-4 ACC), winning 21-15. Virginia won its 19th ACC regular season championship with its last one coming in 2019, when the team eventually went on to win the National Championship.

Despite the conference loss, the Cavaliers are still positioned well to capture the regular-season ACC crown but will need to find more consistency in order to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

In front of 4,241 fans at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia men’s lacrosse was defeated by Richmond for the first time in series history, 17-13. Although the Cavaliers (7-2, 3-0 ACC) got off to a fast start Saturday, taking a 7-3 lead in the first quarter, the Spiders (6-3, 1-0 SoCon) were able to crawl back and take control of the game as they became more comfortable creating offense while shutting down Virginia’s offensive weapons.
