There’s nothing better on a cold day than a quick, warm bowl of soup to fill you up before you head out to the library in the pitch black dark — even if it’s only 5:30 p.m. When it comes to soup places in Charlottesville, one restaurant basically has a monopoly and that would be Revolutionary Soup. Rev Soup on the Corner recently underwent renovations and a slight menu change this past summer. As someone who has been going to Rev Soup since first year and always thought of it as mediocre, I was excited to see what these new changes would bring. I sadly report, however, that I have not found much variance from last year and continue to have issues with the restaurant.

This semester has started off sweaty. With a high of 95 degrees on the first day of classes, Charlottesville weather still feels like summer even as us University students trudge to the library to study. We all know the only cure for a hot day of walking from one side of Grounds to the other is ice cream. Thank goodness Charlottesville has some incredible places to grab a frozen treat before the temperature drops this fall. Here are six of my favorites.

Starting a new fall semester may be an exciting time, but if you’re a second, third or fourth-year, somebody needs to buy the groceries in the apartment and that somebody is you.

With summer quickly approaching, students stuck in Clem cramming for exams are dreaming about studying abroad this summer in Valencia or finally getting the chance to intern on Capitol Hill. Most of us will not be staying in Charlottesville over the summer, so unless you’ve got a local internship or are taking a summer class, the end of second semester means saying goodbye to Charlottesville and its most valuable treasure — Roots.

At the beginning of each semester, you can find most University students catching up with friends or getting ahead on their studying with a free latte from HotCakes Gourmet — a café and bakery located in the Barracks Shopping Center.

Master Chef Julia Child once said, “You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces — just good food from fresh ingredients.” As a college student, however, my meals usually consist of warming up pre-made meals in the microwave or picking up Rev Soup or Roots to eat while I study at the night.

As the holiday season is quickly approaching, so too is that dreaded time of year between where students hole up in the library for countless hours to cram as much information into their heads as possible. Yes — exam time is coming.

With their green dotted boxes and warm, freshly-made doughnuts, Krispy Kreme always reminds me of my childhood. My parents would buy boxes in the morning, and my brother and I would bargain to get two — or maybe three — doughnuts from the box in one sitting. We then warmed them up in the microwave to get that perfect melt-in-your-mouth sensation.

It’s 1 a.m. on a Friday night turned Saturday morning. You’re walking down the Corner after coming from the disaster that is Trin 3 or from dancing on a table at Coupes. Your feet are aching from party-hopping and dancing, but you and your friends aren’t quite sure you want the night to end just yet. And that’s when you see it — that gleaming 1950s-looking sign with the words “The White Spot” calls to you from down the Corner, and you know you can’t possibly go back to your apartment until you’ve had a Gus Burger and a Grillswith.
