It’s 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday. Everyone around you is plastered. Everywhere you look, bodies are writhing together as if in some ritualistic dance. To your left, some dude is making vodka snow cones. Behind him, a gaggle of people are shotgunning Busch Lites. It’s a beautiful scene. Oh, and it’s 1 in the afternoon.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives passed a tax bill Thursday 227 to 205 which would majorly overhaul the current tax code and have significant ramifications for higher education. Among other conditions, the bill would consider tuition waivers — tuition breaks graduate students receive in exchange for doing work for the University — part of their taxable income, and also eliminates tax deductibles on interest for student loans and on other expenses for higher education.

A group of University students who have seen hostility and resentment shape U.S. political discussion want to prevent the same from happening on Grounds. As a result, they created Converge U.Va., which is a student-led initiative aimed to narrow the divide between students of opposing political views, specifically through helping students find common values.

The University’s annual Fire and Safety Report was released this week and showed an increase in reported rape, sexual assault, stalking and hate crimes on Grounds in 2016 from the previous year’s annual report.
