Every fall, University students can expect certain time-honored traditions to return to Grounds: Rotunda Sing kicks off the year, Pancakes for Parkinson’s carries us through the mid-semester slump, and Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn boasts of the largest amount of babies and puppies in costumes on any college campus. With every fall also comes one of Charlottesville’s greatest treats: the annual Virginia Film Festival, now in its 27th year.

The stage in Old Cabell Hall looked empty. With a lone chair centered on the stage, accompanied only by an amplifier and a microphone, the space felt emptier than during orchestral and choral performances, when a row of chairs and music stands dot the stage. A large, tall man strode onto the stage carrying a single instrument, the kora, and sat down. Placing the kora between his legs, its 21 strings facing him, he began to pluck with his thumbs.

All are featured in the uproariously funny comedy of errors and mistaken identities “A Flea in Her Ear,” presented by the drama department this Wednesday through Sunday at the Ruth Caplin Theatre.

There is only one animated film I turn to when I feel the nostalgic desire to revisit my childhood. No, it’s not “The Lion King” or “Aladdin.” In fact, it’s not a Disney film at all. It’s a film which hardly even features children, and instead has two con men scheming their way to become filthy rich as its leading, unlikely heroes. Still can’t guess it? Earlier this month, a crowd of music lovers and friends gathered to watch Sophie Wohltjen give her Distinguished Major voice recital, in which she excellently performed an hour’s worth of music by Mozart, Hugo Wolf and Irving Fine, among others. After her recital, she sat down to answer a few questions about the Distinguished Major in Music and her decision to pursue one.

There is a moment in the song “Let It Go” — arguably the most famous sequence in Disney’s “Frozen” — when main character Elsa gives herself a drastic makeover. It’s a memorable scene: she loosens her hair, somehow applies a full coat of makeup in two seconds flat and transforms her dowdy gown into a dazzling, shimmering one, complete with a shocking slit down the thigh which made mothers gasp nationwide.
