There is a key difference between seeing a movie and viewing a play. In a play, anything can happen. Every night, the same show is just a little different, and the actors bring something new to the stage. The audience responds in a new way from their own points of view. Films obviously cannot achieve the same degree of spontaneity. They are not alive in the same way plays are.

In tight pants, a bright red sweater and a naval cap, Charlie Megira looks a little bit like a cartoon character. He has a pencil-thin mustache and speaks in a thick accent exported from Israel. When he sings, it’s a restrained mumble or a series of whoops and shouts. But man, Charlie Megira can play the guitar.

Staten Island-based alternative group Cymbals Eat Guitars is a four-piece band named for a Lou Reed quote about the Velvet Underground’s signature gritty, cacophonous sound. On its third album, “LOSE,” the group unleashes a sonically ambitious set of songs which belies its relatively small size.
