I am the product of a technology boom. It defines my generation and by association, I am now scared it defines me. Never before has communication been easier, with cell phones, email, Skype, Facebook, Google Chat, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, blogs, Twitter — the list goes on. These forms of social media scream, “Post your lives for all to see and all to know!” The National Security Agency doesn’t even need to dig to unfold your life story anymore.

Plato once said, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” Having spent the past weeks trying to increase civic engagement and register students to vote, I’m beginning to think he’s right. I cannot help but wonder: Is there still civic engagement on Grounds?

There is no comparison to the horror women face when they get lost in New Cabell looking for a female lavatory. Whether you overestimated the level of spiciness in your Lemongrass curry dish or your friends pranked your birthday cookies with ex-lax, if you are a lady in a rush, you are better off finding an open window facing the developing courtyard than a bathroom in the definitively male-built building.

There are many unfortunate specimens one encounters when going out: the crier, the midnight twerker, the constant complainer and even the Miley Cyrus impersonator. But these are the harmless. Regrettably, a trip to Trinity on a Friday can bring a whole other class of drunken personalities.
