ON APRIL 13, 2007, I participated in a direct action against the Society of the Purple Shadows during their annual dawn march on Founders Day. During the march, a member of the Purple Shadows assaulted me. That afternoon, I filed University Judiciary Committee charges against the Society. I was unable to file charges against the specific member of the group who committed these crimes against me because Purple Shadows disguise themselves in purple robes that make it impossible to identify specific members of their clan.

WE'VE ALL heard it, standing with linked arms after a touchdown and singing "The Good Ol' Song." The line "where all is bright and gay" comes up, and someone invariably screams "not gay!" All types of students are guilty of this action -- your fraternity brother, your girlfriend, your suite-mate or some stumbling drunken stain a few rows back. Or maybe it's you.

AS ACTIVE proponents of education about historical inequities at the University, we have not come to the decision lightly to critique De-stereotype Day and Sustained Dialogue. We greatly support the effort of Sustained Dialogue to engage students in dialogue about race; however, we believe this dialogue has been gravely misappropriated.
