On Sunday, several hours before fraternities were required to initiate all pledges, the Inter-Fraternity Council hosted its second annual MadBowl Madness philanthropy event.
“Is courage artifice? / As though to answer were within my means,” Lisa Russ Spaar writes in her poem, “Midas Passional.” It is this characteristic acceptance of the unknown that has set Spaar apart from many of her colleagues. For some, poetry provides answers. Spaar appreciates it mainly because it does not.
“The only thing Greeks like to do more than eat is to feed others,” said Graduate Education student Anna Karnaze, a member of the U.Va. Hellenic Society, an award-winning student group that works to promote Greek culture. This semester the group plans to live up to this ideal by sponsoring the University’s Campus Kitchen project, which uses leftover food from dining halls to combat local hunger.
Food, family and football. In just three words, we can sum up a quintessential U.Va. tradition – tailgating. Tailgating is a display of all things Southern, from the tables piled high with delicious fried chicken and homemade food to the generations of families and friends who loyally gather hours before kickoff in preparation for the game. Sometimes even more important than the game itself, tailgating embodies a love for U.Va. football, win or lose.
For many international students, excitement about studying abroad offsets a difficult adjustment to U.S. culture. In many foreign countries, U.S. colleges appear attractive because of their academic rigor and opportunities to join clubs and take a wide variety of classes.
