After winning two out of three games against Louisville and splitting midweek contests against Old Dominion and George Mason, the Virginia baseball team was home for a weekend series against Georgia Tech. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, both teams were jockeying for valuable seeding in the ACC. Ultimately, the Yellow Jackets (24-14, 9-9 ACC) rallied double-digit runs multiple times as the Cavaliers (30-11, 12-9 ACC) managed just one win in a frustrating series loss.

After a dominant week that included a key home series win over then-No.10 North Carolina and a midweek victory over VCU, the Virginia baseball team went on the road to play Louisville. The Cavaliers (28-8, 11-7 ACC) came into the series ranked 11th in the country, while the Cardinals (21-14, 7-8 ACC) are unranked. Despite dropping the middle game of the series, Virginia was able to win the other two and defeat an inferior opponent away from home.

After a solid performance at the ACC Championships in which they placed fifth as a team and saw sophomore Nick Hamilton win Most Outstanding Wrestler, Virginia wrestling headed to Kansas City, Mo. this weekend for the NCAA Championships. Hamilton, alongside graduate student Justin McCoy and junior Marlon Yarbrough, competed for the Cavaliers (7-6, 1-4 ACC) in the championships as a result of their excellent performance in ACC play.

Already 21 games into the 2024 season, Virginia baseball has racked up a significant sample size of contests to analyze. Having jumped out to a 9-0 start and then continuing to win big games, one might think that the No. 14 Cavaliers (17-4, 3-3 ACC) are in a great spot to make a run for both the ACC Championship and a return trip to Omaha, Neb. for the College Baseball World Series. While that might be the case, Virginia’s pitching woes will make those potential accomplishments a lot harder to come by.

Coming off of a 6-3 win Tuesday against Penn State and a ridiculous Wednesday performance in which the team hit eight home runs against George Washington, the Virginia baseball team was riding high. But their momentum would soon face a stiff challenge at Alex Rodriguez Park, where they played Miami in Virginia’s first ACC series of the year.

After a rough season of ACC matches that saw losses over four consecutive weeks, the Virginia wrestling team finished their conference play Sunday at the ACC Championships. The Cavaliers (7-6, 1-4 ACC) sent one wrestler for each weight class to the event and competed against the best from each of the six ACC schools that have wrestling teams.

After a weekend in Jacksonville, Fla. highlighted by victories against three tough opponents and a dominant 16-4 midweek win against Virginia Military Institute, the Virginia baseball team stayed at home for a weekend series against Massachusetts. The Cavaliers (10-1, 0-0 ACC) came into the series as one of 13 undefeated teams left, while the Minutemen (2-5, 0-0 Atlantic 10) came into the series on low spirits after going 1-2 against Bucknell. Despite dropping a game to Massachusetts Saturday at Disharoon Park, Virginia sandwiched the defeat with two quality wins.

After a close loss to North Carolina saw momentum on the upswing, the Virginia wrestling team hoped to capitalize and secure a win in its final regular season match of the year Friday against Pittsburgh. However, that hopefulness was stunted early on in a 35-7 defeat as the Cavaliers (7-6, 1-4 ACC) were forced to forfeit the opening 125-lbs weight class to the No. 23 Panthers (10-9, 2-3 ACC) due to health injuries that prohibited sophomores Kyle Montaperto and Sammie Hayes from competing. The theme of injuries has been prevalent for Virginia all season, and it held them back from reaching their full potential in this match.

Virginia wrestling entered a Friday matchup — also the team’s Senior Night, held at Memorial Gymnasium — against North Carolina looking to bump itself back up to a .500 record, having fallen in its last two conference matchups. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers (7-5, 1-3 ACC), the Tar Heels (10-7, 2-2 ACC) proved to be the more prepared team as they defeated the hosts 18-16.

After a rough loss in the Commonwealth Clash, the Virginia wrestling team had a week off before their toughest match yet, a Friday road trip down to face NC State. The No. 8 Wolfpack (13-2, 3-0 ACC) boast ranked wrestlers in every class, and it showed in their dominant 38-3 victory over the Cavaliers (7-4, 1-2 ACC).

After a great week for Virginia wrestling in which it won two matches by 30 points or more, the Cavaliers (7-3, 1-1 ACC) were back in action Friday for a Commonwealth Clash showdown against Virginia Tech. Virginia hosted the Hokies (6-3, 2-0 ACC) at John Paul Jones Arena for the first time since 2019, and in front of a crowd of over 2,000 fans, Virginia Tech bested the Cavaliers 27-9.

After a 4-3 loss to TCU in the College World Series ended Virginia baseball’s 2023 season, the Cavaliers headed home from Omaha with mixed feelings. Proud of how far they’d come, but irritated by how close they’d been to achieving college baseball glory. Now, Virginia is ready to take another swing for the fences.

Coming off of a solid performance at the Virginia Duals in which Virginia wrestling won and lost one match, the Cavaliers (7-2, 1-0 ACC) had a slight break before entering duels with Duke Friday and American two days later. The break would prove highly beneficial for Virginia, who picked up a pair of convincing victories over the Blue Devils (4-9, 0-1 ACC) and the Eagles (5-9, 0-2 EIWA) after healing up from several injuries in previous matches.

After a split result Jan. 6 at the Arms Duals, the Virginia wrestling team was back in action Saturday and Sunday in the Virginia Duals. During this event in Hampton, Va., the Cavaliers (5-2, 0-0 ACC) went head to head against Kent State and Wisconsin, coming away with yet another split result.

After a tumultuous Midlands Invitational that saw the team riddled with sickness, injuries and other unforeseen circumstances, Virginia wrestling returned Saturday at the Arms Duals in Richmond. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) were pitted head-to-head against Gardner-Webb (2-3, 0-0 Big South) and George Mason (8-4, 1-1 Atlantic 10), and with momentum at a low after the unluckiest tournament Virginia has had all year, the team needed wins to regain momentum.

After a long break for finals, Virginia wrestling closed out 2023 at the Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Friday and Saturday. The event, which featured wrestlers from over 30 Division I wrestling programs, had a ton of talent in every weight group and was a true test of the Cavaliers’ (3-0, 0-0 ACC) strength.

Coming off an incredible performance at the Mountaineer Invitational in which six wrestlers were individual champions, the Virginia wrestling team began head-to-head matches in Albany, N.Y. against Long Island and Buffalo Friday. The Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) built upon previous showings with convincing victories.

After a strong performance at the Southeast Invitational in which eight wrestlers placed against stiff competition, Virginia wrestling had its sights set on the 2023 Mountaineer Invitational. The invitational — which was hosted by Appalachian State in Boone N.C. — featured wrestlers from the Cavaliers (0-0, 0-0 ACC), the Mountaineers (0-1, 0-0 SBC), Air Force, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. With the level of competition at a slightly lower standard than in their previous large meet, Virginia put forth a far stronger showing.

Kicking off its 2023-24 campaign, Virginia wrestling competed at the Southeast Open Saturday. The open — sponsored by Virginia Tech and hosted by Roanoke College in Roanoke, Va. — featured 372 wrestlers from 22 different academic institutions. The competition was also fierce, as multiple ranked wrestling teams were present, including the No. 5 Hokies, No. 20 Oregon State and No. 25 North Carolina.

Coming off of two consecutive conference wins, the Virginia women’s soccer team was riding high on their way into a Senior Day showdown on Sunday with Boston College at Klöckner Stadium. The Eagles (3-9-5, 0-6-3 ACC) had yet to win an ACC game and were desperate to play spoiler to what was surely an important day for the six seniors the Cavaliers (7-3-6, 2-3-4 ACC) have on their squad. Ultimately, Virginia rallied for a 1-1 tie after a late-game equalizer.
