Even among those who are highly committed to quitting smoking, their efforts can often be derailed by the smoker’s chemical dependence on nicotine. In the past, nicotine patches have been used to gradually reduce a person’s dependence upon nicotine to fully quit, but in the last decade, e-cigarettes, or electronic cigarettes, have been introduced to create the same effect.

Student Health is hosting its semi-annual free testing for sexually transmitted infections April 9 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in Newcomb Hall’s Commonwealth Room. At the event — co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health and the University’s Ryan White Program — students can receive results from HIV tests within 15 minutes and chlamydia and gonorrhea tests within two weeks.

A group of researchers at the University of Barcelona published the results of an eight-year study earlier this month which determined the popular trend of Mediterranean diets may help reduce the risk of heart complications. The researchers found that those at high risk of cardiovascular disease who switched to a Mediterranean-style diet reduced their risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events by 30 percent compared to those eating a standard low-fat diet.

A new post-operative care procedure will now be permanently instituted at the University Hospital, following the release in December of a seven-year study led by Assoc. Surgery Prof. Dr. Todd Bauer. The research found that patients saw drastically shorter hospital stays and reduced costs after receiving a Whipple — a major surgery which treats pancreatic tumors — if meticulous care was taken during the patient’s early rehabilitation post-op.
