If one word could be used to describe Studio Ghibli’s latest animated film, “The Red Turtle,” it would be “flow.” Like the vast ocean encompassing its island setting, every aspect of this film simply flows from one beautifully crafted scene to the next. Presented at the Virginia Film Festival, “The Red Turtle,” which masterfully weaves relatable themes of human life into its narrative, evokes raw emotion in a way few films can accomplish.

For the majority of people, horror movies are a popular vehicle to calm this strange desire. Lately, however, many films in the genre have fallen victim to uninventive remakes of the same old tropes, like in the “Paranormal Activity” series.

Classic Western films had a sort of inherent charm which allowed them to be as popular as they were back in their Golden Age in the early 20th century. There was something fantastical, almost mythical, to them, attractive to audiences much like modern superhero films are today. These days, however, the appeal of the traditional Western genre seems to have more or less disappeared, with recent films like “The Lone Ranger” ending up as box office failures.
