IN THE coming spring elections, students will decide whether the Honor Committee Constitution should be amended to ensure that the single sanction can be changed only with the vote of a majority of the student body. This proposal, referred to as the consensus clause, is a sensible and necessary amendment that will confirm the place of integrity in our community and ensure that any fundamental departure from the foundations of our culture enjoys the active support of the student body.

I FIRMLY believe that the single sanction is the principal source of the honor system's strength and longevity, and that dismantling it would be an extremely damaging, if not fatal, blow to the system. I am no blind idealist who believes that all is right with the honor system -- far from it. As two-time chair of the Honor Committee, I saw first-hand the challenges the honor system faces, and I realize that some of those challenges are created by the single sanction. The overly (and increasingly) complicated procedures the Honor Committee uses, for instance, are a direct result of the due process required for a penalty of expulsion. Nevertheless, my extensive experience with the honor system has convinced me that the single sanction is the proper sanction for an honor offense in the 21st century.

IN ABOUT three weeks, the student body will have the opportunity to vote on four packages of amendments to the Honor Committee constitution. These amendments are of utmost importance to the future of the honor system, and anyone interested in consistency in Honor Committee procedures should particularly support the amendments involving jury composition and the role of counsel.

THE 2000-2001 academic year promises to be an eventful one for the honor system. One of the great misconceptions is that it is static, mired in the rigid ways of our ancestors. The honor system is in fact dynamic, and has been shaped and molded by generations of students; the system is still undergoing this process today.
