University students have access to an abundance of databases through the University Library — many of which are vastly underutilized. One such database is Kanopy, a streaming service featuring a wide variety of films from all across both the globe and decades of cinematic history. Students can create an account with their NetBadge login and stream the films in the database for free. For those having trouble navigating the overwhelming options in Kanopy’s collection, here are six must-watch films.

Eight years ago, Class of 2019 College and Education alumna Jessica Harris — at the time still in high school — founded Empowered Players, a nonprofit in nearby Fluvanna County that facilitates free arts and theater classes for children in grades K-12. Since then, Empowered Players has grown and continued to spread love for the arts and empower youth throughout Fluvanna County.

Though many of these projects were well-executed, the formulaic approach and studio oversight led to these films often feeling safe or undaring. Those who have recently turned to social media, especially “BookTok,” for book recommendations might recognize the face of William Dozier. A Charlottesville resident and class of 2018 alumnus, Dozier has amassed a substantial following on “BookTok,” a subcommunity on TikTok dedicated to talking about books, authors and literature. In addition to his more than 115,000 TikTok followers, Dozier boasts over 164,000 followers on Instagram and over 17,000 subscribers on YouTube.

The end of awards season fast approaches with the 96th Academy Awards set to air March 10. In Alexander Payne’s new film “The Holdovers” — which screened at The Paramount Theater during the Virginia Film Festival Saturday — Angus Tully, played by newcomer Dominic Sessa, finds out he cannot spend the holidays with his mother. Instead, he has to stay at his boarding school over the holiday break with his unrelentingly headstrong history teacher Paul Hunham, played by Paul Giamatti.

Ben Sloan, Charlottesville resident and English professor who has taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College and the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, recently published his second book, entitled “Then On Out Into a Cloudless Sky.” The collection of poetry — depicting stories of childhood memories, longing for connection and many more — draws inspiration from the experiences of others, including his own students.
