The University’s Class of 2018 has not yet set foot on Grounds, but interns at the Office of Admission are already courting the University’s future generations. In addition to blogging for Hoo Stories and assisting the Outreach Office, interns at the Office of Admission trudge through the grueling Charlottesville summer humidity twice a day to give tours.

At some point during their four years at the University, almost every student on Grounds has some interaction with Peer Health Educators. They sponsor the Fourth Year 5K, an event that has become a popular alternative to the drinking challenge “Fourth Year Fifth” before the last home football game. When students schedule appointments with Student Health, they also has the opportunity to discuss concerns with an educated peer advisor.

As students walked to classes last Tuesday, many were confronted with an assuming RV parked in front of the Chemistry Building, challenging them to take a stand against a form of injustice they would refuse to tolerate.

An athlete bounds down the field grasping a ball tightly, ready to score. Players about a foot taller than him attempt to strip the ball away with brutal tackles, while two more players trail behind, armed with dodgeballs. They are ready to take aim at any opportunity to upend their opponent from their broomstick. This is Quidditch, and it exists outside of Hogwarts. In fact, it takes place frequently on Grounds.

While many University students left early last week to return home, not everyone can say they actually left Charlottesville’s city limits this Thanksgiving break. For a variety of reasons, some chose to say; the distance home was too far, job shifts had to be maintained and a home football game beckoned to loyal spectators. Such a decision didn’t prevent the following students, however, from seeking comfort in their own ways.

Kim Brooks Mata lives by one philosophy: dance is a reflection of life, and life is a reflection of dance. But for Mata, the University dance program’s head director and artistic director, the decision to turn her love of dance into a career was initially anything but certain.

Tucked beside the looming Observatory Hill dining hall is a quaint garden, bursting with vegetables and towering sunflowers and often unseen by many first-year eyes. Just as constant as the rush to and from dorms, however, is the work that goes into the University’s Community Garden.

While numerous University students accepted internships in a wide range of fields this past summer, most did not learn how to sharpen machetes on their first day. For third-year Architecture student Madeleine Partridge, however, it was a must.
