Heightened numbers of University Police Department officers, security officers and Ambassadors were on patrol this weekend and will maintain an increased presence through Tuesday for Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn. During weekend celebrations, UPD reported six liquor law violations by underaged individuals and three other intoxication-related incidents.

The second my alarm blares in the morning, I angrily stumble out of bed to turn my phone off only to realize I have to be in class in under an hour. My baggy t-shirt and sweatpants feel way too comfortable to change out of. Still, I personally aspire to look nice for class simply for my own self-confidence and to feel more ready to face my peers. I have found that these 10 things are ways to feel put together while also staying comfortable.

The University has seen a large descent on the New York Times’ 2023 College Access Index, a report that ranks the top most selective schools in the nation according to their socioeconomic diversity. The University’s ranking fell from the 50th percentile in 2014 and 2017 to the 25th percentile in 2021 and is currently ranked 248th out of 283 of the most economically diverse public and private universities across the United States.

Virginia Swimming and Diving took down Texas Friday in a dual meet that set a positive tone for both the men's and women's squads early on in the season. The women’s team defeated the Longhorns 113-71, while the men took down their opponents 99-89.

The basement floor of Newcomb Hall has become livelier as of late as students excitedly explore the new Asian American Student Center. The center’s calendar has quickly been filled with a vibrant selection of events by student groups to facilitate bonding, dialogue and empowerment among Asian American-identifying students at the University. The AASC’s inception after over a decade of student advocacy calls for both celebration and a moment of reflection. Its opening is a step in the right direction towards a more inclusive and safe University for Asian Americans and an example of how students from marginalized backgrounds can and should call for their own spaces at the University.

Virginia football could not capitalize on its season-changing win against No. 10 North Carolina last week, instead losing a 29-26 heartbreaker on the road Saturday against Miami. The Cavaliers (2-6, 1-3 ACC) jumped out to an early double-digit lead but saw the Hurricanes (6-2, 2-2 ACC) fight back to push the game into overtime, where a touchdown by the home team sealed the victory and gave Virginia its fourth loss by three or fewer points.

Virginia volleyball’s misfortunes in ACC play continued Friday evening after a defeat against Wake Forest in Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (8-13, 1-10 ACC) took the first set, but the Demon Deacons (16-6, 7-4 ACC) found their footing as the match progressed, taking the next three sets and securing a victory.

In its final game of the 2023 regular season, Virginia men’s soccer squared off against North Carolina Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. In a low-scoring affair, the No. 14 Cavaliers (10-3-3, 5-2-1 ACC) bested the No. 10 Tar Heels (7-3-5, 2-3-3 ACC) 1-0 behind a strong defensive performance.

This weekend, my family drove down to Charlottesville for the day and they ended up arriving at the perfect time for brunch. It was my task to scour Yelp to find a great brunch spot and decided to visit The Nook at the Downtown Mall, persuaded by the classic breakfast options on the menu. Ultimately, I found that The Nook offered a satisfying dining experience with a comforting fall touch. Virginia Athletics announced Thursday that field hockey Coach Michelle Madison will be on leave for the remainder of the 2023 season. Madison will miss both the ACC and the NCAA Tournaments. The release did not provide details as to the reason for Madison’s departure.

Hundreds of students gathered at the south steps of the Rotunda to participate in a walkout Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., calling for the University to acknowledge casualties in Gaza as genocide and divest from the military technology used in the siege on Gaza. The group held protest signs, chanted and wore the colors of the Palestinian flag.

Virginia women’s squash has the chance to be the strongest it has ever been following a successful season last year as the Cavaliers return the bulk of a rotation that finished ranked No. 4 in the country. But in order to break into the stronghold the top three teams have on the sport, each returning player — as well as potentially a newcomer — will need to be at their best to persevere over a long season.
