As the demographics of college undergraduates continue to evolve, more non-traditional students are pursuing higher education. In 2011, the National Center for Education Statistics estimated 38 percent of students in higher education were over the age of 25, and this percentage of students is projected to increase another 23 percent by 2019. Over a quarter of undergraduates now have children, many are older than 18 to 22 years old and more veterans are attending school using benefits from the GI Bill after serving in the military.

While each year tens of thousands of refugees seek safety in the United States, coming to the states is often a difficult and continuous process. At the University, first-year College student Ahmad Frahmand knows these legal, emotional and access challenges firsthand. In the face of his refugee status, Frahmand has found success and community — a story many organizations in Charlottesville hope to make the norm.

After graduation, University students’ jobs take them everywhere from New York City to Colombia. The Career Center surveys the outgoing class each year to determine which states and countries employ the most University students. This year, for the first time, the Career Center has adopted a new data management system to give students real-time job search information. The Career Center is also working to bring a larger variety of employers to the University, offering students more options for job locations.
