Today’s youth makes up approximately 13.2 percent of the American population. However, most of their voices are not being heard at the polls, as many of them are not yet old enough to vote. Since young people are such a sizeable portion of the population, students must be taught that it is possible to take matters into their own hands and make the change they wish to see in the world through civic engagement and student activism. A unit on civic engagement should be integrated into high school American history courses, as students must be taught and encouraged to exercise their rights effectively and responsibly.

A primary purpose of the University is to enrich the minds and lives of its students, and while many aspects of the University certainly contribute to this, faculty plays an invaluable role in fulfilling that mission. The faculty at the University excels at instilling a love of learning in their students, as they attempt to ignite a passion in students for the subject they have dedicated their lives to. These faculty members are also tasked with preparing students to enter a vast and globalized world where they must have the skills to apply that they have learned from their four years of studies.

As a result of increasing violence, millions have fled El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. According to PBS, gang violence escalated in these countries in 2006, when the Mexican army went to war with cartels in Central America, setting off a years-long conflict with thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire. Furthermore, many of the children affected are influenced by drug traffickers or “narcotraficantes” to serve as drug-mules and assassins. In light of the horrific violence spreading through Central America, thousands of immigrant children are arriving unaccompanied at the border between Mexico and the United States. Unfortunately in the wake of these tragedies, the Trump administration has shown an utter disregard towards immigrants — specifically immigrant children — before and after they reach the United States.

The first U.S. Census was directed by Thomas Jefferson in 1790, and it has been conducted every ten years since. Its mission is “to serve as the leading source of quality data about the nation’s people and economy.” Also, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics, census data is meant “to present a full and reliable picture of the population in the country.” As the next census approaches, we must ask whether the census really achieves the goal of providing reliable data in regards to who resides in the United States.

Last year, Student Council organized Diversity Week to celebrate the diversity present throughout the University. While it is nice to acknowledge diversity at the University, we should be focusing more on expanding it. The Council should consider having a Diversity Week which is refocused on not only celebrating diversity, but raising awareness about the lack thereof. The University is lacking in diversity relative to the diverse world in which we live. While the University has taken steps to try and increase diversity, more action is necessary.

As throngs of starry-eyed Americans enter jewelry stores and collectively spend billions of dollars each year on jewelry, they never stop twice to think of all the blood, pain and turmoil which their small and lovely diamond has caused. Being aware of all the strife that a simple diamond can cause in a third-world country, would Marilyn Monroe have sung about diamonds being “a girl’s best friend” so confidently?
