In Indonesian cuisine, rice is a staple. It is eaten plain or with a spicy mixture of beef, pork and vegetables. It is drizzled in peanut and soy sauces or with sweet coconut milk and papaya and even sipped in fermented rice wine. So when second-year College student Felicia Tansil visited Newcomb Hall for the first time last August, it was soon apparent that her diet was going to change. But that was not the only surprise awaiting her during her first year in college and in the United States.

University students and aged NPR listeners alike gathered last Friday to hear best-selling humorist David Sedaris speak of his life in Tokyo, love for "The Zombie Survival Guide" and his unlikely friendship with a convicted child molester. As usual, he entertained his fans with his distinctive high-pitched voice and uncanny insights. This evening, however, was a little different: Sedaris had recently been accused of fabricating events in his essays.

Whether it is an obsession, a guilty pleasure or a pet peeve, the hit television show "Grey's Anatomy" is inescapable. The hospital drama nabbed the third-largest audience in last week's Nielsen Ratings, behind two episodes of "American Idol." Since college students are a part of the show's prime demographic, University students are bound to run into "Grey's" gossip on a regular basis, regardless of their feelings about the show.

One year and two months ago, blogger Kyle McDonald had a single red paper clip. With this paper clip, he would trade for bigger and better items, and track his progress on his blog (oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com). Last July, in exchange for a movie role, McDonald became the newest occupant of a two-story home in Kipling, Saskatchewan, Canada. His success elicited admiration and disbelief, but most frequently: "Why didn't I think of that?"
