Too little too late was the story of Wednesday’s game, as despite a fourth-quarter push, five-seed Virginia women’s lacrosse fell 11-9 to four-seed Syracuse in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The Cavaliers (8-9, 6-4 ACC) trailed the Orange (13-4, 7-3 ACC) for the final 54 minutes of game time as Syracuse dominated from start to finish.

The two-seeded Cavaliers (22-3, 12-1 ACC) overcame an early doubles deficit and won four consecutive singles courts in straight sets to dispatch the Fighting Irish (21-7, 9-4 ACC), the same opponent they had defeated 4-1 in regular season play just two weeks prior in Charlottesville.

In its final regular season match of the season, No. 8 Virginia clinched its first ever outright ACC regular season title with a thrilling win over No. 14 NC State Sunday afternoon. It was a marathon of a dual — with a razor-thin doubles point and several extremely close singles matches — but after three hours and 40 minutes, the Cavaliers (19-4, 12-0 ACC) extended their win streak to 13 straight, defeating the Wolfpack (19-7, 10-2 ACC) 4-2.

Framed by a wall of Virginia memorabilia that could put the most dedicated season-ticket holder to shame, a young boy with blond hair leans into the camera. Behind him, an orange and blue pennant, a 2019 National Championship poster and a photo of football Coach Tony Elliott line the walls. It is a shrine to Cavalier tradition, but his content is anything but a standard fan tribute.
