Beginning next year, upperclassmen students opting to live on-Grounds will have more options when choosing roommates. The Queer Student Union has partnered with Housing and Residence Life for a gender-neutral housing initiative, which HRL is referring to as “open housing.”
Earlier this summer, Housing and Residence Life informed all new and returning resident advisors that beginning in the fall semester, they would have the additional responsibility of “on-call” hours from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday nights. Previously during these hours, resident advisors only had dorm coverage responsibilities — which include three rounds around the building — on Friday and Saturday nights. The new “on-call” responsibility does not require resident advisors to perform rounds to check each hall for unsafe situations — it only requires them to remain in the building in case students require their attention.
After its inaugural year, Dorm Norms — a program presented to first-year students within their first weeks at the University — is entering its second year with updated programming on sexual violence and assault on Grounds.
With the new academic year arriving, some first-year students will be moving into the newly renovated Gooch Dorm — the culmination of a six-year plan developed by the University for renovating the dorm.
Say goodbye to sweaty Augusts, Old Dorms. This summer, Housing and Residence Life will continue an extensive renovation of both McCormick Road and Gooch-Dillard residences, including new bathrooms, updated lounge spaces and the installation of HVAC systems on McCormick Road.
Students who live in the Alderman Road dorms have recently been experiencing problems with the Open MyDoor app.
The Office of Housing and Resident Life released the resident advisor decisions for this upcoming year during Spring Break for first-year, upper class and focused residential areas. Of the 409 students who applied, 90 candidates received offers.
