The Student Council discussed concerns around the University's recent on-Grounds housing policy change and Friday’s field storm following the football game during Tuesday’s general body meeting. Student Council also received an update that the Cavalier Career Closet received a donation of business attire from a local church and that November Airbus tickets — a low-cost shuttle service to Dulles and Richmond airports — are live.

Though not recognized as a part of Grounds, the bustling street of restaurants and shops known as the Corner has long been revered as an extension of the University and a hub of student life. But it is also a space which occasionally experiences quite a bit of business turnover. Just this past summer, one such business, Littlejohn’s, closed after being open for only a little over a year. Littlejohn’s untimely demise, however, should not be seen only as a sign of the difficulty of keeping long-term businesses on the Corner — after all, some restaurants and stores like the iconic Virginian and Mincers have been around since the mid 20th century.

When students walk into an American Sign Language class at the University, they do not hear voices. Instead, they gather around in a semi-circle, looking each other in the eye, their hands animated in conversation. This classroom environment mirrors the broader Deaf community — one rooted in connection and shared understanding — and fosters a sense of belonging among University students regardless of hearing ability.

The Senate of Virginia again demanded answers from the Board of Visitors about the resignation of former University President Jim Ryan in a letter sent Monday by State Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Charlottesville. This comes after multiple other letters were exchanged between Deeds and the University beginning Aug. 1.

With five consecutive NCAA Championship wins on the women’s side and the nation’s top recruiting class for the men, it is evident that Virginia swimming has thrived off of the program’s signature high-energy, intense style of Coach Todd DeSorbo. But DeSorbo is not alone. Another coach has been with the Cavaliers for the entirety of DeSorbo’s tenure — Tyler Fenwick.

An initiative on Grounds called Cavalier Education — run by Student Council — is putting classroom power in students’ hands. Students can design and teach their own one- or two-credit classes, which are then registered in the Student Information System for other students to enroll in.

From playing parties at their home base of Sigma Nu fraternity to opening for the Neon Trees at John Paul Jones arena, Last Call has been soundtracking University weekends since 2022. The band has found their place in the Charlottesville indie-rock music scene, making a name for themselves by combining unique individual experiences and talents with a collaborative musical process.

As the month of October looms on the horizon, that can only mean one thing for the city of Charlottesville — the Virginia Film Festival is making its return. The 38th annual iteration of one of the eastern seaboard’s most reputable festivals draws cinephiles and industry professionals alike to Charlottesville. From Oct. 22 through Oct. 26, the festival will bring together more than 100 of the year’s best films for an incredible weekend celebrating the cinematic art.

The scenario in which Coach Ryan Odom finds himself this fall is unique. A first-time Power Four head coach, Odom has found success at every stop, from UMBC to Utah State to VCU. But his newest post at Virginia is different in several ways — total roster and staff turnover mean that Odom is far from the only newcomer in Charlottesville.

After a successful win Friday over California, Virginia ended its trip to the Golden State on a high note, topping Stanford 2-0 and maintaining an impressive eight-game winning streak. The Cavaliers 8-0, 4-0 ACC) had the clear upper hand over the Cardinal (4-6, 1-3 ACC) throughout the first half, but it was not until the third quarter that they were finally able to break through Stanford’s physical defensive line.

At only 25 years old, Canadian singer Bella White has already made a name for herself as one of the most captivating young presences in modern bluegrass. White will be stopping in Charlottesville Friday on her tour supporting North Carolina string band Mipso.
