The Virginia men’s swim and dive team has experienced its share of ups and downs throughout the season, with the No. 22 Cavaliers dominating dual meets they were supposed to win, but struggling in sealing victories and losing close meets against the likes of ACC rivals North Carolina and North Carolina State. This weekend, Virginia will seek to make good on past difficulties with a strong showing at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Tex.

Virginia track and field will split its team to compete in two separate meets this weekend. Sprinters and members of relay teams will travel to the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, while distance runners will stay much closer to home at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. Athletes in field events will be found in both meets.

The eighth-ranked Virginia men’s lacrosse team is back in action tonight, as VMI comes to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers have never lost a game to this in-state foe, owning a spotless 20-0 record with an average margin of victory of more than 17 goals going back to 1949.

This season, the Virginia women’s swim and dive team has been one to remember. Under first-year coach Augie Busch, the Cavaliers not only won their seventh consecutive ACC title, but also shattered the record books in the process. Now, the long season which began with its first meet in October has one more stop for No. 7 Virginia — Minneapolis, Minn., for the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships.

On Monday, University alumnus Ian Cohen wrote a story for Grantland entitled “In Praise of Virginia: The Mediocre, Miraculous No. 1 Seed.” That Bill Simmons’ colossus of a sports and pop culture website would publish such a piece signifies Virginia’s arrival as a national talking point. A big to-do, if you will.

The No. 12 Virginia wrestling team competed at the ACC Championships Saturday, March 8 in Blacksburg, Va. The Cavaliers (18-3, 5-1 ACC) placed third with 61.5 points, five-and-a-half behind second-place No. 10 Pittsburgh (13-3, 6-0 ACC). But No. 16 Virginia Tech (18-5, 4-2 ACC) stole the show — running away and claiming their second consecutive ACC title with 87 points.

Racing for the first time since November, the No. 5 Virginia women’s rowing team hits the water March 15 at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational to open the spring season. The past week has been nothing short of sensational for the No. 5 Virginia men’s basketball team. After earning its first outright regular season ACC championship since 1981 with a dominant win against Syracuse, Virginia claimed its first top-five ranking in more than a decade. To top it off, redshirt sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon was named co-ACC player of the week Monday after scoring a career-high 19 points against then-No. 4 Syracuse — the first such honor for any Cavalier this season.

The No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team hits the road Thursday, travelling to Los Angeles for a pair of matches against No. 3 UCLA and Loyola Marymount. The Cavaliers defeated No. 12 Baylor and No. 9 Notre Dame last weekend in Charlottesville, each by a score of 6-1, to bounce back from a 4-3 loss at the hands of No. 1 Ohio State in the ITA Indoor Semifinals.

With a Virginia alumnus for a father, I have been at least a nominal fan of Virginia sports for my entire life. Dad played a significant role in shaping my expectations, and sat me down at a young age to tell me Virginia fans can’t have nice things. I learned a number of new words while listening to him bemoan the Virginia basketball team in the depths of its struggles.

On a night when the No. 12 Virginia men’s basketball team made the Hurricanes’ play resemble a brisk wind, picking up its 12th consecutive victory and program-record 15th ACC win, the story wasn’t about the Cavaliers’ 65-40 decimation of Miami.
