No. 11 Virginia men’s soccer team battled competitively in a match against ACC semifinalist challenger No. 3 Syracuse Wednesday. Despite a stellar offensive and defensive performance from the Cavaliers (10-4-4, 5-1-2 ACC), who battled the Orange (13-2-4, 5-1-2 ACC) to a 2-2 draw, they were unable to finish the job in the penalty shootout.

Appearing in its 29th straight NCAA tournament, No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer will begin its run for a national championship Saturday evening when it takes on Fairleigh Dickinson for the second time this season. After being knocked out of the tournament fairly early as a No.1 seed last season, the Cavaliers (13-3-3, 6-2-2 ACC) are hopeful to advance to the College Cup this season.

Graduate student forward Sam Brunelle is no stranger to John Paul Jones Arena. She grew up a short drive away in Greene County, Va. and became a Virginia women’s basketball fan at the tail end of legendary Coach Debbie Ryan’s tenure. As she grew up, Brunelle made frequent trips to John Paul Jones with her family, getting so close to the program that she even served as a ball girl, dreaming of the day she might get the chance to take the court herself in an orange and blue uniform.

Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Friday in the ACC Cross Country Championships hosted by Virginia at Panorama Farms — the site of the 2023 NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers placed third out of 15 teams in the women’s event and sixth out of 15 teams in the men’s event.

Over the last decade, Virginia men’s basketball has defined winning in collegiate athletics. They have won on the conference level, toppling the Atlantic Coast Conference five times in the regular season and twice in the tournament. They have won on the national level, battling to an NCAA Tournament National Championship in 2019. They have won in just about every possible metric since Coach Tony Bennett took the reins in 2009, having amassed 316 wins to just 117 losses during his 13 years at the helm.

Virginia swimming and diving (1-0) opened its season over the weekend with a dual meet against Florida in a battle of two powerhouses within the sport. The No. 1 women’s team defeated the No. 11 Gators (2-1) 180-115, while the No. 9 men’s team fell to the No. 3 ranked Florida squad 189-111.

A report released last week revealed systemic sexual misconduct and abuse in the National Women’s Soccer League. The investigation was set in motion after former NWSL players Mana Shim and Sinead Farrelly — the latter of whom played for the Virginia women’s soccer team from 2007 to 2010 — came forth with allegations of sexual assault against former NWSL coach Paul Riley in September 2021.

The only sound is rubber rebounding off the palms of countless students, complementing the constant chatter around each circular net. Dozens of worn-down circles on the field’s grass are the mark of feverish competition.

During the reign of former Coach Bronco Mendenhall, Virginia football consistently possessed one of the best offenses in the country. Mendenhall took over a team that scored in the bottom quarter of all FBS teams in 2015 and improved its output nearly every year until it peaked as the 21st highest scoring unit in the country last year.

Virginia football enters this new season with tons of roster turnover induced by the departure of Bronco Mendenhall and subsequent hiring of Tony Elliott as head coach. After Mendenhall’s departure, several key players transferred and others graduated and moved on to the National Football League. Meanwhile, Elliott brought an influx of Football Championship Subdivision talent through the portal and will focus on promoting internal talent, particularly in the trenches on the offensive and defensive line.
