Every once in a while, and by that I mean constantly, my roommate and I pick up catchphrases, which we overuse incorrectly and inappropriately. We say these things so often, our friends visibly wince when they see the wheels turning in our heads as we contemplate using one of these phrases.
There you are in your first discussion hoping it will end in the first 10 minutes. After all, how much do you really have to discuss on the first day of classes? Your TA hands out the syllabus and you think, "Yes, I'm golden! This can't take too long." Then he throws you a curve ball - one you knew might come flying but hoped would not. He says, "We're all going to go around and introduce ourselves," and you think, "This won't be that bad. Ten more minutes tops." And then he seals your fate by continuing, "Just your name, year and a fun fact about yourself."
About 1.2 million Americans were infected with HIV in 2008 – a number which grows by 50,000 each year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. As this number increases, University students take steps every year to show their support for those living with the disease and to commemorate those who have died from it.

I am a lover of libraries. I've never been to a library I didn't like on some level. I've been underwhelmed and unenthused. I've disliked many a library inhabitant, finding their loud conversations rude and their takeout smelly. But even this is not enough to quell my love for the library. I'd yell about my love from on top of a table in BioPsych or jumping on the couches in the MacGregor Room during finals.

Along with seemingly the entire first-year class, I travel to O-Hill every Monday and Wednesday. As I stand in the line, which pretty much backs all the way to Alderman Road, I focus on two things - avoiding eye contact with tablers and eavesdropping on first-year conversations.

I used to think spring was my favorite season. I convinced everyone I knew that nothing was more beautiful than spring at the University. With Jefferson's 10 blooming gardens, and the already ever-present beauty here, there's not much more you could ask for. Spring's only pitfall is the allergy-induced haze that fogs up at the worst times, but ask any girl and she'll tell you beauty comes at a price. Even though allergies can knock you out faster than Mike Tyson, spring is a beautiful, luxurious season. But is it really the best?

I've been thinking a lot about the future in the past week, especially now that it seems like everyone I know is heading to his designated career fairs. Yay! This column is going to be about another obnoxious kid telling you about how she's always known what she wants to do with her life! False. Relax, overanxious and tense fourth years. This is a column of comfort. I guarantee you'll read this and say, "Wow! At least I've got more figured out than this chick!"

As I lethargically walked down Rugby Road to get to my first class in Wilson Hall, several people passed me at a sprinter-like pace. They had come to play, or powerwalk as it were. When I was starting to feel like the slowest-moving person on the earth, I passed some people walking at a snail's pace. I was stopped at the light at Rugby Road and University Avenue, which left me ample time to try to figure these people out. After giving these wannabe athletes the up-and-down, I decided their rush wasn't about being on time to class. I didn't think they were in a hurry to get to their next classes for intellectual stimulation.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities available to University students interested in learning more about medicine, but few of those offer the accompanying global perspective that can be gained by hands-on participation. The Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children is a worldwide organization committed to “improving pediatric and maternal health in the developing world through the implementation of innovative and self-sustainable health improvement programs,” according to its website. Established four years ago, the University’s branch of FIMRC is just one of 62 American and five international chapters.
A lot of people discover a lot of things at Beach Week. Fashion is not usually one of them, but this was the week I discovered what my wardrobe had been missing. In the troves of Bargain Beachwear, I found the most valuable piece of clothing I own
First years, welcome to the greatest four years of your life at the best college in the country. Here at the University, you'll find plenty of traditions. Soon, you'll go to Convocation. You'll discover there's a river on the Lawn. You might even streak the Lawn and go steam tunneling. But, you already know all about those customs. I'm going to fill you in on a lesser-known and more recent tradition: nerding.
I keep having to double-check my planner. I always have had trouble with dates. I still can't believe its 2011. I usually type 2010 on the top of my papers, sometimes even 2009. That's more of a personal problem, though. I'm slightly more concerned about the fact that this is the last week of April. I stare at my iCal asking how can this week be the last full week of classes?
Charlotte\nHobbies: I write plays and fiction, I play guitar horribly and I make stuff out of other stuff.
There's hardly anything more disappointing than spotting a hot guy at the gym, only to realize he's doing some girly work out. I'm far from a fitness expert, but as a casual gym-goer, here are my observations on where guys belong. Walk, or run, through a typical gym routine with me.
