Virginia basketball is back in the Final Four for the first time in more than 30 years. Overcoming the demons of their long Final Four hiatus, Coach Tony Bennett’s personal drought of never making the championship and last year’s infamous tournament loss, the Cavaliers (33-3, 16-2 ACC) have cemented arguably their greatest season in program history.

It has been quite some time since the Virginia football team has entered a season with such high expectations. In their 2013-14 Super Bowl-winning season, the Seattle Seahawks rumbled through the NFL behind arguably one of the best secondary units in league history. Nicknamed the “Legion of Boom,” the foursome of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas III, Kam Chancellor and Byron Maxwell terrorized opposing quarterbacks with smothering play against their receivers. They proved to be all too much for then-Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning to handle in Super Bowl XLVIII, holding his record-setting offense to just eight points in a 43-8 blowout win.

There’s just something about college football in the fall that makes it special. Maybe it’s the seemingly perfect temperature, the roaring of the crowd on third downs or sitting and chanting amongst fellow fans, feeling a strong sense of pride.

The 2017 Virginia football team was a hard squad to figure out. Inconsistent play in every phase of the game led to stretches of play where the Cavaliers looked like they could compete with anyone — and others where their lethargic play was difficult to watch.
