Ten games into the Virginia women’s basketball team’s season, it seemed as though the team’s hope for a statement year was basically faded. An early December loss at Rutgers in which the Cavaliers put up only 43 points left the team sitting at 4-6 with ACC play looming. Even with a pair of talented sophomore guards and a six-foot-nine defensive stalwart, this team didn’t have the look of one that could bring Virginia Coach Joanne Boyle a big year that was long overdue.

With hopes to bring home its first NCAA Tournament title in school history, the Virginia men’s basketball team looked like anything but a tournament favorite in a shocking blowout at the hands of UMBC, 74-54.

One of the most successful seasons in Virginia men’s basketball history has at last reached its critical points, as the No. 1 Cavaliers head to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed.

When you’re the No. 1 team in the country, teams will naturally play up to you, in hope to be the giant killer every college basketball fan loves. Georgia Tech played that aspiring team on Wednesday, playing well beyond its record to make things interesting against No. 1 ranked Virginia. After realizing the Yellow Jackets would be no cake walk, the Cavaliers corrected themselves and pulled out a 65-54 victory to clinch at least a share in the ACC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament.

After much uncertainty following the crazy past week in college basketball, the previous No. 2 Virginia men’s basketball team earned the top spot in the AP Top 25 poll.

Saturday night’s clash between the No. 2 Virginia men’s basketball team and Virginia Tech is far from a typical rivalry game. With a huge loss for No. 1 Villanova at the hands of St. John’s Wednesday, the Cavaliers (23-1, 12-0 ACC) have to chance to achieve something they haven’t in 35 years, when legend Ralph Sampson was running the floor — a No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.

It has been widely mentioned this year in men’s college basketball that no true dominant teams exist. A lack of blue blood dominance has left many solid teams in the race to jockey for the national spotlight as they vie for a good seeding come the NCAA Tournament.

Riding high after a massive road win against Duke, the No. 2 Virginia basketball team returned home Wednesday for a clash against Louisville — the biggest threat to the Cavaliers’ ACC title hopes. The Cardinals gave the Cavaliers all they could handle, but one of Virginia’s best offensive performances of the season lifted them to their 10th conference win — a 74-64 victory.

There may not be two men’s basketball teams in the ACC more different from each other than Virginia and Duke. Virginia Coach Tony Bennett’s squad of defensive-minded, heavily-developed players do not share much in common with the offensive juggernaut Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski builds with predominantly highly-touted freshmen.

Virginia men’s basketball. Thirty-nine points.

Two of the hottest teams in the ACC squared off Sunday night as the No. 3 Virginia men’s basketball team took on an NC State squad coming off of two top-25 upsets. Though the Cavaliers (16-1, 5-0 ACC) struggled with turnovers and rebounding at times, they rode a take-over performance from senior guard Devon Hall to a 68-51 win over the gritty Wolfpack (12-6, 2-3 ACC).

The No. 3 Virginia basketball team took its six-game win streak and highest ranking since 2016 into a tough matchup against Syracuse at John Paul Jones Arena Tuesday night. In a defensive slugfest that went down to the wire, the Cavaliers (15-1, 4-0 ACC) outlasted the Orange (12-5, 1-3 ACC) 68-61 to stay unbeaten in conference play.

Following a gritty home win against Boston College, the No. 8 Virginia basketball team prepared for its first big road test of the ACC slate, taking on Virginia Tech and its high-caliber offense. Having lost two consecutive games in Blacksburg, this matchup had upset potential, but a dominant effort on both ends from the Cavaliers (13-1, 2-0 ACC) lifted them over the Hokies (11-4, 0-2 ACC) in blowout fashion, 78-52.

In its first ACC game of the season, the No. 9 Virginia men’s basketball team was tasked with a home test against Boston College, which came in atop the conference after an upset of Duke. The Eagles (10-4, 1-1 ACC) gave the Cavaliers (12-1, 1-0 ACC) all they could handle, but Virginia came out victorious in a wild 59-58 affair. The win was the 200th of Virginia Coach Tony Bennett’s career.

A rough end to the 2016-17 season and several key transfers left the Virginia men’s basketball team unranked and with lower-than-usual expectations leading into the 2017 season. Through 13 games, the Cavaliers have shown they’re not going anywhere, exploding to a 12-1 start and rising up to No. 8 in the AP Poll rankings. The Cavaliers are far from perfect thus far, but many things have gone right for the team in the early going. Here are my season takeaways as Virginia heads into the 2018 portion of the season.

Another successful non-conference showing for Virginia men’s basketball Coach Tony Bennett drew to a close on Friday night when the No. 13 Cavaliers took on Hampton at home. Despite falling behind early, Virginia (11-1) gave a solid effort on both ends of the floor and cruised to an 82-48 victory.

An almost two-week break from the court for the No. 16 Virginia men’s basketball team ended on Saturday as they welcomed Davidson to John Paul Jones Arena. Despite a sluggish start, the Cavaliers (9-1) kicked off their rust and cruised to an 80-60 win over the Wildcats (4-4).
(12/07/17 5:46am)
Playing its second true road game of the year, the Virginia basketball team looked to continue its unbeaten start to the season against West Virginia. The Cavaliers were unable to overcome their own turnovers and West Virginia’s hot shooting, as the Mountaineers handed them a 68-61 loss.

After coming out on top in a defensive slugfest, the red-hot Virginia men’s basketball team took to the court at John Paul Jones Arena Saturday, looking to gain some offensive swagger back against Lehigh. The Cavaliers (8-0) put on a show for the home crowd, flashing big dunks and crafty assists as they cruised past the Mountain Hawks (4-4), 75-54.

A hot start to the season gave the Virginia men’s basketball team confidence heading into the NIT Tip-Off Tournament this weekend, where they were set to battle some tough opponents at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Cavaliers (6-0, 0-0 ACC) used big runs and stifling defense from many contributors to capture the tournament title, taking down Vanderbilt and Rhode Island.
