The University received 42,093 early action and early decision applications for first-year admission to the Class of 2028, marking a 3.4 percent increase from the 40,713 early applications received for the Class of 2027. Applications — which were due by Nov. 1 — included 10,593 Virginians and 29,334 out-of-state applicants.

The Darden School of Business is introducing ten new courses this academic year covering a range of topics, including marketing, entrepreneurship, the entertainment industry and writing. The new courses incorporate writing skill and the study of the arts into some of the department’s offerings.

Charlottesville City Council unanimously voted to approve implementation of a new pay structure and compensation policy for all City employees. Through the new policy, which was approved Aug. 22, Council is focusing on increasing pay equity and transparency. Under the plan, city employees will see 25 new pay grades, ranging between approximately $16 and $118 per hour.

Students are forced to find accommodations for graduation a year in advance — and pay room rates approximately double the standard price — as a result of hotels reaching capacity months in advance for graduation weekend. In fact, many Charlottesville hotels have been fully booked for a calendar year prior to the Class of 2023 graduation.

The Board of Visitors’ Audit, Compliance, and Risk Committee reviewed findings of the most recent audit and planned to increase efficiency in financial reporting during its Thursday 1:45 meeting. The Committee also approved changes to the U.Va. Athletics Compliance Charter and discussed cybersecurity and IT concerns in a closed session.

Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds and other University officials, including University Police Chief Tim Longo, have drafted a bill that would outlaw carrying a firearm at state-owned colleges. Under the proposed bill, any individual convicted of possessing a firearm on University property would be subject to a class one misdemeanor.

Monticello launched a pilot program this academic year that allows free admission for all undergraduate and graduate students at the University and Piedmont Virginia Community College for the 2022-23 academic year. Students with valid student IDs can reserve free tickets for either the self-guided tour or the Gardens and Grounds pass, which typically cost $32 and $22 per adult, respectively.

The University released the 2022 Annual Fire Safety and Security Report Friday. The report outlines crime statistics from 2019 to 2021 and demonstrates an increase aggravated assault, robberies and sexual harrasment within the last year.
