It has been thirteen days since 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington vanished from the Metallica Concert being held at John Paul Jones Arena. Word of the disappearance spread swiftly across campus, and among the whisperings came speculations of how and why a college student could simply vanish. Though there is crime in Charlottesville, it is not unlike the crime in any other city or college town. Despite a $100,000 reward offered by Harrington's family and another $50,000 added by Metallica, there are still no major leads in the investigation.

With tensions high over health reform, there is little room for other highly emotional debates. Despite these polarizing times, the debate over illegal immigration came to a front when the Obama administration revealed its enforcement policy in regards to undocumented workers. American Apparel became a template for the new policy when they were forced to fire a quarter of their Los Angeles work force, approximately 1,800 employees who possessed questionable paperwork.

Mad cow. SARS. Avian flu. Swine flu. What's next? The never ending saga of epidemics has played out repeatedly in the media to the deep chagrin of the American public. American universities must be prepared to meet these new health risks without initiating mass hysteria across campus.
