February is the shortest month of the year, especially since 2022 doesn’t get the benefit of a leap day. The brevity of this winter month may pose a challenge to the lofty reading goals of many — made in the New Year’s spirit — as assignments for spring classes pile up. However, a quality book offers much-needed respite from the unrelenting academic grind during what promises to be a cold and dreary month.

“House of Gucci” graced theaters with its long-awaited presence last week, right on time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Given that the film follows the dysfunctional family behind the Italian fashion house of Gucci, its release in the midst of a holiday week full of family gatherings is quite fitting. Trailers dropped by production company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in July, and October generated considerable buzz for the biographical crime drama.

Among the most highly anticipated films of the year, “Spencer” earned itself a gala screening slot at 8:30 p.m. Friday — drawing the curtain on the Virginia Film Festival’s third day. Jody Kielbasa, University vice provost for the arts and VAFF director, introduced the film. U.Va. Gamma Knife Center sponsored the film’s screening at the Paramount Theater.

Applause echoed within the walls of The Haven as local author Jocelyn Nicole Johnson took the podium downtown Friday evening. She received a star’s welcome from a group of 150 people gathered to support the long awaited release of her first novel, “My Monticello.” New Dominion Bookshop hosted the intimate event in conjunction with WriterHouse, a local writing community. Doors opened at 6:45 p.m. and The Haven’s benches were full within minutes.

Following its cancellation last fall due to COVID-19, Family Weekend will be hosted on Grounds beginning Oct. 22 and wrapping up Oct. 24. Academic events, information sessions and sports games galore are scheduled to take place over the course of the three-day family affair. The program promises to celebrate students’ academic, athletic and artistic accomplishments at the University. Free performances and tours occurring throughout the day and late into the evening Friday and Saturday will showcase talent in the departments of art, drama, music and more.
