Former chief of the Charlottesville Police Department RaShall Brackney announced she is suing the the City of Charlottesville for gender and racial discrimination at a press conference Wednesday morning. Brackney was first hired by CPD in 2018 and served as chief for over three years before her contracted was was terminated in September.

The University Police Department extended a previous four-year “no trespass” order for Jason Kessler, “Unite the Right” rally organizer and Class of 2009 alumnus, Wednesday. “No trespass” bans are issued to individuals who break Virginia criminal code, violate University regulations or otherwise place the health and safety of University community members at risk.

In the basement of Wesleyan Methodist Church Tuesday evening, about 100 students and Charlottesville community members gathered with pizza and music, learning from each other in a teach-in and open mic event which gave attendees a safe space away from a controversial speaker being hosted on Grounds at the same time.

The University Board of Elections announced results of the student body elections Friday evening. Fourth-year College student Ceci Cain was elected Student Council president with 73.4 of the vote. Students also voted to pass the historic Honor referenda, which changes the single sanction for committing an Honor offense from expulsion to a two-semester leave of absence, marking the largest change ever made to the Honor system since its inception in the 1840s.

The spring semester will begin as planned with no changes to move-in dates or the start of in-person instruction, per an email sent Friday by University President Jim Ryan, Provost Liz Magill, Chief Operating Officer J.J. The University offered admission to 1,120 early decision candidates out of 3,466 applicants for a 32.3 percent admission rate. Decisions were released Friday evening — 33.6 percent of those admitted are minority students, 7 percent are foreign nationals and 53.3 percent are white.

The Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee of the Board of Visitors met Thursday to review the fiscal year 2020-21 audit and provide the Enterprise Risk Management program report. Later that afternoon, the Building and Grounds Committee named the Contemplative Sciences Center building the Contemplative Commons and provided an update on construction.
