When the weather warms up and spring approaches, Virginia fans know one thing — another season of Virginia baseball lies ahead. Last year, Virginia struggled in the first half of the regular season but redeemed itself, eventually earning a spot in Omaha, Neb. at the College World Series. There, Virginia made it past Tennessee and remained in after losing to Mississippi State — who ended up winning the title — but ended up exiting after failing to defeat Texas.

The Virginia women’s basketball team lost 71-42 in its second matchup of the season against Virginia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena Thursday night. The last time the Cavaliers (3-15, 0-7 ACC) faced the Hokies (15-5, 7-2) Jan. 18, Virginia came up short, losing 69-52 with a crushing second quarter 11-point scoring run by Virginia Tech.

When the women’s basketball team decided to cut short the remainder of their 2020-21 season last January due to a plethora of COVID-19 complications and team injuries, they had finished the season winless with five losses.

Virginia men’s soccer picked up its first win in ACC play against Boston College on Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Despite an early goal from the Eagles (4-5-2, 0-3-2 ACC), the Cavaliers (4-7-2, 1-4-0 ACC) rebounded with two goals from sophomore forward Leo Afonso to win the game 2-1.

Members of the Student Council Diversity Engagement Committee collaborated with the Muslim Student Association to create ways for Muslim students to obtain Halal meals during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began April 12. During Ramadan, individuals who practice eat two meals a day — suhoor before sunrise and iftar after sunset — and fast in between as an act of worship. This practice lasts the entire month.

The Board of Visitors’ Finance Committee approved three action items and announced its delay in discussion of potential tuition and fees increases during their meeting Friday morning. Tuition discussion was delayed due to unfinalized aspects of Virginia’s 2020-2022 budget.

During a Miller Center discussion Wednesday, panelists representing the Miller Center and Politics Department analyzed exit polling statistics and electorate data to provide the University community with clarifications and predictions about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. During the discussion, all four panelists — Saikrishna Prakash, Law professor and Miller Center senior fellow, politics Prof. Jennifer Lawless, Miller Center Director William Antholis, and Mary Kate Cary, Miller Center practitioner senior fellow — said that the election was too close to call and fielded questions about the closeness of the race and what the ultimate result could mean for the future of each party and the nation.

As the Nov. 3 deadline to return an absentee ballot for Virginia approaches, the Albemarle County Election Board is preparing students, both in and out of state, for voting absentee due to the prevalence of COVID-19.
