Roughly two weeks into my first year at the University, I failed to quit my journalism addiction and applied to work as a writer for The Cavalier Daily’s sports section. The application consisted of writing two stories: 1) A preview of Virginia football’s 2012 matchup against Georgia Tech, a game that followed-up the Cavaliers’ victorious effort over Penn State due to a game-winning catch by Jake McGee; and 2) a feature on any aspect of the Virginia football team. For the latter, I wrote about — you guessed it — McGee.

Virginia women’s basketball smelled blood in the water Sunday afternoon in Durham, N.C. Having won eight-consecutive games and coming in on top of the ACC, the Cavaliers wanted to knock off their toughest foe yet in then-No. 16 Duke.

With two three-pointers and eight points in the first two-and-a-half minutes of play, the No. 12 North Carolina men’s basketball team seemed poised to upset a red-hot No. 8 Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena Saturday afternoon. However, Virginia sophomore forward Mamadi Diakite had something different in mind.

Virginia women’s basketball came so close to ending a drought last season. Failing to reach the NCAA Tournament for the prior six seasons, the Cavaliers racked up several momentous victories — including an upset over then-No. 4 Florida State — en route to a 20-win season. For the first time in years, the team gave fans reason to be excited.

Heading into last season, the defensive-minded Virginia men’s basketball team always had a guy who could score. Whether it was Joe Harris, Justin Anderson or Malcolm Brogdon, Virginia Coach Tony Bennett knew whom to turn to in order to inject life into Virginia’s slow-paced offense.

Virginia women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle left Starkville, Miss. Friday night frustrated with her team. With a squad that had showed a lot of promise last season — including an upset of then-No. 4 Florida State — Boyle hoped for a strong start to the season against No. 7 Mississippi State. Instead, Virginia appeared “out of sorts” according to Boyle, turning over the ball 23 times in a 68-53 loss to the Bulldogs.

Typically, there are two types of Virginia football fans — the sharply cynical, “of course we lost again” pessimist, and the relentlessly hopeful, “we’ll get them next time” optimist. However, the Cavaliers’ recent success has given rise to a new type of fan — the overly confident, “we have a bowl game in the bag” fool.

Virginia women’s lacrosse owned the ACC in the first decade of the 21st century. Winning a conference title in 2004 and then again in each season from 2006-08, the Cavaliers could not be stopped.

Admittedly, I am not the biggest tennis fan. I played a bit in high school, but never really cared to follow the collegiate or professional levels. The sport just isn’t that exciting to me and, subsequently, I haven’t really paid attention to Virginia’s teams.
