FRUGALITY and economic discretion are commendable qualities, even more so when spending others' money. While the Appropriations Committee of Student Council displayed admirable frugality in allocating funds this semester, the discretion it used in the case of the Consortium of University Publications leaves much to be desired.

THE HOUSING Division is set to reject the petition of the Woody House Council to attain priority housing next year, and some say that the residents of Woody have been compensated enough for their troubles. But these residents deserve the priority housing to make up for their sacrifices and to provide them with the consistent community they lacked this year.

LITTLE things bother me. A hamburger with too much ketchup. A desk that wobbles. Sitting on an airport tarmac for six hours. But this little thing is a bigger deal than many may think, and the grim airline situation needs to change, and change fast.

COMING back, one can't help but notice the abundance of anti-Greek and anti-rush signs up around grounds. While they claim to point out the prejudice and shallowness of members of the Greek system, they are hypocritical and intolerant in themselves.

THERE are many controversial proposals in the recently released Honor System Review Commission report, including getting rid of student juries and changing the format of the trial process. Faculty and students are worried that these changes will give the Honor Committee, a group of 21 elected student representatives, too much power, thus getting in the way of the principle of student self-governance that we hold dear.

LEADING up to the election, you would not find a more vehement supporter of Vice President Al Gore. I would debate, argue and fight with my Republican friends about the election. My basic philosophy was that Texas Gov. George W. Bush would be the worst thing that could happen to this country.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - It's midnight on election night. Hundreds of people are gathered around the stage and monitors. The tightly packed crowd screams and waves their hands like Abercrombie-wearing teenage girls at a Backstreet Boys concert. In recent days, two specific gay rights issues have hit close to home. As many students are aware, some think that the ROTC program at the University shouldn't be allowed to operate on Grounds because it discriminates against openly gay people. In my hometown in Connecticut, a member of the school board has proposed barring the Boy Scouts from using the schools, again because of their anti-gay policy.

TEXAS Gov. George W. Bush, his running mate, the Republican Party, and several members of the media have attacked Vice President Al Gore recently on the issue of trustworthiness. Specifically, many have called him "a liar" guilty of "embellishments," "inventing facts," "making up stories," and "complete fabrication." Looking into the statements in question does raise the issue of exaggeration and lying; on the part of the reporters and politicians - not Gore.
