During a condensed Board of Visitors meeting in the Rotunda Wednesday afternoon, the Board approved an increase to the budget for the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. The discussion was initially intended to take place in a Finance Committee meeting, but was moved to a full-Board discussion due to schedule changes related to Hurricane Florence.

The Honor Committee held its first meeting of the school year Sunday evening in Newcomb Hall in which members debated previously proposed changes to the contributory mental disorder process, including changing the name of the process, the removal of a student’s right to appeal a CMD decision and creating more explicit timelines for CMD requirements to be met.

The University Transit System underwent a number of changes at the start of the 2018-19 academic year. Among the changes are updated bus stop signage — which include scannable QR codes — as well as new names for routes around Grounds.

As the anniversary of the Aug. 11 and 12 white nationalist rallies on Grounds and in downtown Charlottesville approach this upcoming weekend, the one-year anniversary of the Class of 2021’s initial arrival on Grounds follows close behind it. The class moved in the weekend after the horrific events, adding a somber layer to the usual anxieties of beginning a new season of life.

Gloria Graham — the University’s new associate vice president for safety and security — is in her position largely to prevent the University’s widely-criticized response to the torch-lit white nationalist march down the Lawn last summer from happening again. On May 7, Graham assumed the position, which was created at the recommendation of Margolis Healy & Associates, an outside contracting firm the University hired to assess the state of safety and security following the deadly events of the Unite the Right rally last August.

As the University’s Class of 2018 prepares to walk down the Lawn for Final Exercises and to proceed into their future, some will continue their education at graduate school. The University Career Center’s most recent data is for the class of 2017 and reveals that 14.6 percent of the class of 2017 pursued higher education as their first destination after graduation.

The Honor Committee held its final meeting of the academic year Sunday evening. During the meeting, the Committee heard presentations from Kevin Warshaw, a third-year Engineering student and University Judiciary Committee chair, and Harper North, a second-year College and Batten student and incoming vice chair for selections for Housing and Residence Life. Each person spoke on their respective organization’s recruitment process for support officers and resident advisors.

During its weekly meeting Sunday evening, the Honor Committee discussed reforming the process of selecting support officers, or University students who participate in the workings of the Honor System by staffing cases and working with Committee representatives. Changes would seek to make the support officer selection process less complex and make the support officer pool more diverse and representative of all University schools.
