Students should welcome the recent decision by the University Transit Service to institute new transit services and revise bus routes. If only some of the suggested changes go into effect, the UTS bus system will be faster, more evenly distributed and more reliable.

Only in Charlottesville would Election Day and the Police concert coincide. This presents a dilemma: Watch a 56-year-old Sting writhe and croon suggestively across the stage at John Paul Jones arena or perform your civic duty and vote. Unfortunately, this presents parking problems, too. University Parking & Transportation should take care to ensure that hordes of Police fans don't interfere with voters attempting to reach the nearest polling place.
Last night it appeared that Student Council might actually create a much-needed Rules and Ethics Board, but once again bureaucratic infighting dashes all hopes. This time, Council decided to table the bill until next week, when Council members expect the Representative Body to reach a compromise. Let's hope so. The University's decision to offer free flu shots for benefits-eligibleemployees marks an important step in improving its preventativehealth care system. Even more encouraging is the recent decision to expand the program that, among other things, provides free vaccinations to more University employees. Both represent positive steps toward a more comprehensive and effective employee health care plan, but increased benefits come with different pricing strategies.
Thomas Jefferson once said that the key to any great Faculty Senateis a great Web site. Well, he didn't phrase it exactly like that, but you get the point: Up-to-date, comprehensive Web sites are the easiest way to give students and faculty the information they need to be informed members of the University community. And, if we may ventriloquize Mr. Jefferson one more time, he would be disappointed with the state of the Faculty Senate's Web site.
Despite recent rainy weather and the news that the Albemarle County Service Authority adjusted some of its water restrictions, students should be just as vigilant about conserving water. Responsible members of the community ought to incorporate conservation as part of their daily lives, not as a function of last week's weather or government restrictions.
Today was chilly and windy.
Arts Dollars are like frequent flyer miles. Sure, they seem like an OK idea at first -- until you read the fine print. Like frequent flyer miles, the idea behind Arts Dollars -- or ART$, as the University's Orientation Web site calls them -- sounds interesting and generous: The University turns $12 of the Student Activity Fee into $75 worth of credit students can use at "a variety of music and drama performances throughout the year." You'll soon see what the University means by "variety."
