The game was knotted at 3-3, both teams had traded punts for most of the game, and the Cavaliers had the ball on their own 6-yard line. It looked like the score would remain tied at the half.

If Duke's Todd DeLamielleure plays like a student of the game, that's because he's been around it his whole life. The junior inside linebacker from Durham, N.C., is the son of Duke tight end coach and former NFL All-Pro lineman Joe DeLamielleure, so he's got football in his blood.

No one could blame Virginia football fans for being leery Saturday when running back Antwoine Womack scored in the second quarter to put the Cavaliers up 21-0 against Richmond. After all, the Cavs led by that exact score at halftime last week before losing to Brigham Young in overtime. When the score stayed the same for the next eight minutes, even the most confident fans were beginning to experience deja vu.

Four years ago, wide receiver Demetrius Dotson was one of three true freshmen who saw time for the Virginia football team. Tailback Thomas Jones went on to set the school record for rushing and become the No. 7 overall draft pick this spring. Cornerback Antwan Harris went in the seventh round. Dotson has seen his career take a more winding path, but now he's healthy and happy to be playing.

After a 1999 season that left the Cavalier football team with more questions than answers, coach George Welsh vowed to "reinvent the corporation." Assistant coaches were shuffled, offensive and defensive schemes were evaluated, and players changed positions. However, Saturday's 38-35 overtime loss to Brigham Young, a game the Cavs led 21-0 at halftime, looked painfully familiar to longtime fans of the program.

The Virginia men's lacrosse team ended its season May 27 with a 12-11 loss at the hands of Princeton in the NCAA semifinals. The loss marked the end of the careers of Cavalier senior captains Drew McKnight, Ryan Curtis, Jay Jalbert, Jason Hard and Peter Ragosa, as well as classmates David Bruce, Court Weisleder, Richard Reid, Doug Worthen, Bruce Townsend, Ben O'Neil and Duffy Birckhead.
