Almost as long as there have been athletics, athletes have used their elevated status to promote positive social change. One of the first recorded instances of sports intersecting with social unrest occurred in 532 AD in Justian’s Byzantine Empire when supporters of separate chariot racing teams, the Greens and the Blues, were arrested in connection with deaths caused by the Nika Revolt the previous year. The Blues and the Greens were traditionally strong rivals — much like Virginia and Virginia Tech — and together, asked Justinian to pardon them. This led to six weeks of rioting, 30,000 deaths and the burning of the landmark church Hagia Sophia.

Virginia volleyball won all three matches between Sept. 17-18 in straight sets, turning Memorial Gym into a raucous fortress along the way. The following weekend, the Cavaliers (8-4, 1-1 ACC) travelled south to kick off ACC play against NC State and North Carolina. In the first matchup, Virginia lost a four set matchup against the Wolfpack (7-5, 1-0 ACC) Friday night. On Sunday, the Cavaliers took down rival Tar Heels (11-2, 0-2 ACC) in a four set match — their first ACC win under Coach Shannon Wells.

Three former Virginia soccer players appeared in the sport at the Tokyo Olympics. Combined, they played 966 minutes and registered a grand total of one shot, zero assists and zero goals. But all three players — American women Becky Sauerbrunn and Emily Sonnett and New Zealander Joe Bell — made contributions well beyond the box score.

Virginia’s men’s basketball team has had an unprecedented decade of success. In the last 10 years, the Cavaliers have appeared in all but one possible NCAA Tournament, won five ACC regular-season championships, a pair of ACC Tournaments and a National Championship. Those 10 years were more successful than the rest of the program’s history combined.

It’s been a long seven years, and it will be a few years longer before all is said and done, but students and fans rejoice — Electronic Arts Sports has announced plans to revive the hibernating “NCAA Football” video game. EA produced a version of the game every year between 1994 and 2013 and included the likenesses of legendary amateur athletes from Tom Brady to Johnny Manziel.

After Bryce Perkins’ two year run as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of Virginia’s football program, Virginia is back to the same old story under center. The post-Perkins era started with promise as Virginia beat Duke at home. However, the Cavaliers have now suffered four consecutive losses, each more discouraging than the last.

Virginia football opened its season with a resounding 38-20 victory over Duke, relying on a balanced offense and several turnovers to defeat the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-3 ACC). Sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong led the way with a rushing score and two touchdown passes to freshman wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. Junior running back Wayne Taulapapa topped 100 total yards and added two more touchdowns on the ground.
