Going back to school can be scary and overwhelming, but it can also be invigorating and inspiring. Despite the often intimidating nature of starting classes, there are so many reasons to be grateful for the opportunity to start a new semester at the University.

Having just finished my first year, I hope to provide some insight into the experience for members of the Class of 2026. I now know how fast first year flies by, so making the most of the sometimes nerve-wracking experience is vital. Even though the beginning of the next semester is still far out, I wanted to share my insights before class registration begins and before you may embark on your college shopping sprees. Cheers to the highs and lows of being a first-year student — it is one unique journey.

There is a huge difference between waking up at 7 a.m. to go to class versus waking up early because you want to — I know I will be savoring the opportunity to dictate my morning alarms this summer. Instead of my alarm blaring in my dorm room and scrambling to get to class, summer is the ideal time to wake up slowly, sip your coffee, watch the news and start your day on a much more peaceful note. I will not be sad to bid farewell to the early alarms and bitterly cold walks to class that constituted the majority of my first year.

This unfortunate feeling is familiar to most people — waking up on a Sunday morning and panic immediately coursing through your body. After managing to enjoy your weekend, you suddenly realize the mountain of deadlines threatening to strip you of your happiness, joy and will to finish the semester. Even worse, Sundays are supposedly a day for relaxation and reflection, yet we often bear suffocating sentiments of terror. These unbearable feelings of dread and fear are better known as the “Sunday scaries.” Thankfully, there are several ways to combat the Sunday scaries — allowing you to turn Sunday into a day that does not have to be so scary after all.
