The University Board of Elections announced the results of the 2013 University-wide elections at noon Saturday, 20 hours after they were scheduled to be released. Their release was delayed due to “the significant amount of data generated by the high voter turnout” which hindered the computer system that tallies the results, UBE said.

LeFevre dormitory was evacuated Wednesday morning after a suspicious white powder was found in a microwave in the student lounge. A sign on the microwave read, “Use at your own risk,” which prompted a student to contact authorities.

University Engineering Prof. Paul Allaire is currently facing a criminal investigation after police subpoenaed more than a decade’s worth of banking transactions leading them to suspect misuse of up to $1 million in University funds. Allaire is not currently facing arrest and no charges have been filed.

The Board of Visitors Special Committee on Strategic Planning met Friday to outline its proposals for future University initiatives. Much of the meeting consisted of a presentation by University President Teresa Sullivan’s steering committee, which presented findings on efficiency, student life, synergy and technology initiatives, with a focus on maintaining or establishing national leadership in those domains.

A group of 350 college presidents signed a letter to U.S. legislators Monday advocating for gun control reform. The petition follows a week of contention within the Virginia legislature, in which a Senate committee eventually rejected a recent gun control measure designed to close the so-called gun show loophole.

The key to success at the University lies in inspiring students, education reformer Leon Botstein said to an audience of faculty Friday during a lecture entitled “Resisting Complacency, Fear and the Philistine: Modernization, Tradition and the University.” Botstein, the president of Bard College since 1975, challenged professors to rethink the way they teach students in the 21st century.
