University President Jim Ryan created a Fall 2020 Committee this week tasked with developing various administrative, academic and financial recommendations for the fall semester. Chaired by Provost Liz Magill, the committee includes University-wide representation, including one student — Ja’Mel Reed, a third-year in the College and an incoming co-chair of Housing and Residence Life.

Tenure-track faculty who meet eligibility criteria will automatically be granted an additional probationary year, according to University Provost Liz Magill’s recent memo. While the Faculty Senate and the American Association of University Professors at the University support this decision, both said that they would like to see this extension apply to non-tenure-track professors as well. Currently, the change will only apply to tenure-track faculty whose contracts prescribe a start date before April 1, 2020 and were scheduled to undergo tenure review in the 2020-21 academic year or later.

Two years ago, the University’s club table tennis team had just two active members and the team’s CIO status was frozen. Flash forward to today and the club team now has 100 active members and third-year Engineering student Shirley Zhang qualified this year for the national championships in women’s singles.

Third-year College student Ashley Grullon received exciting news during a surprise Zoom call Saturday — she will be living in West Lawn Room 15 next year. The room, known as the Gus Blagden “Good Guy” Room, is reserved each year for students who exemplify the Class of 1963 alumnus’ altruistic qualities.

The University’s decision to adopt Credit/No Credit as the default grading system this semester in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic allows students to choose whether or not to receive a letter grade until April 28. Previously, students were required to obtain their instructor’s permission in order to take classes CR/NC.

The world of collegiate athletics was rocked a few months ago when California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB-206, the Fair Pay-to-Play Act — a bill that permits student-athletes to earn compensation for the usage of their name, image or likeness, as well as hire agents. Virginia will follow soon thanks to a recent vote by the NCAA Board of Governors, which started the process to enhance these opportunities across all NCAA divisions.

University Provost Liz Magill announced Monday in a University-wide email that all in-person summer programs through June 30 are canceled. The decision comes on the heels of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s Monday announcement issuing a statewide stay-at-home order effective immediately until June 10.

The cancellation of all winter and spring NCAA championships presents a clear issue for Virginia sports fans — no March Madness. However, missing the tournament is just the start of problems for student-athletes — this will also mean a massive loss of revenue for both Virginia Athletics and the NCAA.

The University has extended the deadline for students to withdraw from courses to Thursday at midnight — the same day that online classes will begin. The decision follows the University’s decision to transition to remote learning.

Both Virginia Athletics and the ACC have suspended all practice and competition until further notice due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Additionally, the ACC has banned recruiting efforts and participation in NCAA championships.

The Board of Visitors met Friday at the Rotunda for a meeting of the full board. University Provost Liz Magill discussed the state of student advising, and the Board heard updates from the School of Data Science and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, as well as University President Jim Ryan and Director of Athletics Carla Williams.

Freshman Kate Douglass’ impressive resume touts a laundry list of achievements. She competed as a member of the 2018-19 U.S. National Junior Team, swam at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the 2017 Junior World Championships, set numerous high-school records in the state of New York and qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in four events — the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, the 50-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley. All of that was before she even stepped foot on Grounds her first year.

The University Judiciary Committee summarized the University Board of Elections results and heard from Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Marsh Pattie at its general body meeting Sunday. Pattie, who served as a UJC representative during his time in the Curry Graduate School of Education from 2002 to 2003, discussed how UJC has changed in the last 20 years.

Barbara Kelly, former women’s basketball coach and director of women’s sports at the University, passed away in her hometown of Garner, N.C. this week.

Today, women make up more than half of the student body at the University and participate in 14 out of 27 varsity athletic teams. The athletics department is headed by Carla Williams, the first female African American athletics director at a Power 5 conference school. However, things weren’t always this way.

Surviving three practices a week, skipping holiday breaks and missing weeks of school at a time are all consequences of being on the Virginia Dance Team. However, these sacrifices are worth it when dancers get to witness once-in-a-lifetime moments. For team captain and senior Emily Graffeo, dancing for the school she loved in front of over 70,000 people as the men’s basketball team won the 2019 NCAA national championship was an unforgettable experience.
