At a University-run virtual town hall Tuesday and an independently organized faculty-led town hall Thursday, administrators and faculty presented differing accounts of the events of May 4, when police forcibly cleared a pro-Palestine encampment near the University Chapel. The details contested between the town halls included the clarity of the University’s tent policy, aggressiveness of protesters, provision of medical treatment and the presence of suspicious individuals at the encampment.

An unspecified group that calls themselves the 17 Society painted over a memorial on Beta Bridge that was dedicated to the three students killed in the Nov. 13, 2022 shooting late Wednesday night. In a letter taped to the side of the bridge, the group claimed responsibility for painting over the memorial, saying that they did so in order to open the bridge for future messages from the University community. Some members of the University community, including multiple Virginia football players, painted a new memorial late Thursday afternoon.

After a controversy regarding editorial oversight of the paper caused The Cavalier Daily to disaffiliate from the University, newspaper alumni continue to stress the importance of the paper’s independent reporting 45 years after the split. The disaffiliation was sparked by the newspaper’s long-term refusal to acknowledge the authority of the University’s Media Board of Directors, which was tasked with overseeing student publications, and codified The Cavalier Daily’s financial and editorial independence.

Valentina Mendoza Gonzalez, incoming Student Council president and third-year Batten student, plans to improve the student body’s engagement with the Student Council by making its services more accessible and rebuilding relationships with underrepresented Contracted Independent Organizations during her term. In an entrance interview with The Cavalier Daily, she stated her intent to pay student leaders and said she aims to ensure that Support and Access Services — a Student Council branch providing a range of legal, financial and academic support resources — is accessible for all University students by providing more inclusive products.

Student-run activist organization Students for Justice in Palestine announced the creation of the U.Va. Apartheid Divest coalition at a teach-in event Tuesday, which also included presentations on history and current events related to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. SJP hosted the event, titled “Palestine: It’s Not Complicated,” in collaboration with the University chapters of Faculty for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, Law Students for Palestine and Medical Students for Palestine.

The Virginia House of Delegates voted unanimously to end consideration of applicants’ legacy status in applications to the Commonwealth’s state schools Jan. 30, following another unanimous vote on an identical bill in the Virginia Senate the week prior. The legislation, which would end the longstanding practice of favoring applicants who are related to one or more alumni of state universities, is expected to be signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

The Board of Visitors’ Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee convened Tuesday to review audited financial statements from July 2022 through June 2023. The open session also included a discussion of the University’s protocol for financial reporting, as well as a general review of the University’s financial position over the fiscal year.
