About 25 to 35 students will be displaced from their dorms Sunday night after an electrical fire at Lambeth Field residences during the afternoon that left three apartments without power after officials decided to turn off electricity due to safety concerns. No injuries were reported by officials as a result of the incident.

Brendan Nigro, a fourth-year College student and the student member to the University’s Board of Visitors, announced at a general body meeting of Student Council Tuesday that U.Va. will no longer be implementing 24/7 parking fees at the Central Grounds Parking Garage next month. In recent weeks, the announcement of the 24/7 fee at the garage has sparked criticism among students regarding safety concerns for those who may not be able to afford the new fees late at night and would choose to walk instead of drive home.

In an interview with The Cavalier Daily earlier this week, University President Jim Ryan said U.Va. must determine the legality of requiring that its dining provider, Aramark, pay its contracted workers a higher wage. When asked about his support for a higher contracted wage, ignoring the legal issue, Ryan did not take a stance, saying he needed to do more research.

Ahead of a hearing on an approximately three percent tuition hike at the Board of Visitors later this week, University President Jim Ryan told The Cavalier Daily Tuesday he supports increasing U.Va. tuition for third- and fourth-year students to offset costs, though he said he hopes this hike is “the last significant bump that you see.”

The Charlottesville City Council unanimously approved a pilot program at its meeting Monday for the operation of electric scooters and bicycles in the City. The program is expected to begin Nov. 13 — allowing city staff to begin processing applications from interested companies — and will last until July 2019.

Members of the College Republicans at the University have knocked on several thousand doors since the beginning of the midterm campaign season this past August, and some volunteers have made as many as 15,000 phone calls to voters in the Fifth Congressional District in an effort to elect Republican Denver Riggleman to Congress.

The University Democrats sent out teams of volunteers into a variety of neighborhoods in Charlottesville Sunday as part of the organization’s ongoing canvassing effort prior to Tuesday’s elections. Volunteers visited residences to promote the Democratic candidates for the Fifth Congressional District and U.S. Senate — Leslie Cockburn and Tim Kaine respectively — and to ensure residents are prepared for Election Day.

Republican candidate Denver Riggleman defeated Democratic candidate Leslie Cockburn in the U.S. congressional race for Virginia’s Fifth District seat Tuesday. Riggleman won approximately 54 percent of the total vote, while Cockburn earned about 46 percent of the vote in the Fifth District.

The University’s Fontaine Research Park could see major redevelopment in the coming years as the administration looks to increase accessibility to the area and ease the burden of patient medical services at the U.Va. Health System. Short-term plans for the area include the construction of a parking garage along Fontaine Avenue and an additional 500,000 square feet of research and clinical space.
