The Cavalier Daily’s Facebook comment section can be an infuriating hotbed of activity. Many commenters are older alumni — or some not even alumni — voicing their opinions about events and decisions made at the University, and frequently, these commenters attack The Cavalier Daily and sometimes single out the writers themselves. While media outlets should be critiqued and publicly in some instances (that’s why The Cavalier Daily employs a public editor) in order to do their job better, some commenters seem to have never heard the advice against shooting the messenger.

“To the person who stole my antidepressants, I hope you’re happy,” David Sedaris read from his diary entries, mixing dark and crude humor in front of a packed crowd Wednesday night at the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center. Sedaris shared four essays from his new collection, entitled “Calypso.” This marks the second week of his lecture tour after the book’s publication in May.

The University announced $100 million gift as a part of the Honor the Future campaign this weekend. The money is for a new scholarship program to attract first-generation students to the University. The gift was announced by University President Jim Ryan at a dinner for donors and community members on the South Lawn.

The University Board of Visitors Finance Committee endorsed a proposal Thursday to increase tuition rates for the 2018-19 school year. For most undergraduate schools, the Board voted to support a 2.5 percent raise for returning in-state students and 3.5 percent for out-of-state students. The full Board will vote Friday on whether to implement the tuition increases.

The hottest trend in coffee — nitro coffee — has come to Charlottesville in the funkiest coffee shop. Paul Dierkes, Joel Artz and Damian Warshall, the co-founders of nitro coffee shop Snowing in Space, began brewing and distributing nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee in 2015 to local coffee shops and business offices.
