John Paul Jones Arena was good to the Virginia men’s basketball team a season ago, as coach Tony Bennett’s team joined Oregon, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana and California as one of only six high-major programs to go unbeaten at home. The Cavaliers finished 15-0 on their court, with marquee wins over eventual national champion Villanova, California, Louisville and ACC tournament champion and NCAA runner-up North Carolina.

Miami outscored Virginia 17-0 in the second half as the Cavaliers fell to the Hurricanes, 34-14, Saturday. Virginia’s record dropped to 2-8 in coach Bronco Mendenhall’s first season. Football writer Grant Gossage had the following takeaways after the Senior Day loss.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of lead-ins to the 2016-17 Virginia basketball season. On Sept. 29, senior point guard London Perrantes’ and junior guard Marial Shayok’s pictures of Cavalier players kneeling for inequality and injustice circulated on Twitter, which regardless of intent, caused a media distraction.

A 27-20 defeat at Wake Forest last Saturday washed away any hope the Virginia football team had in somehow winning out, and reaching its first bowl game since the 2011-12 season.

Throwing a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter Saturday, Virginia junior quarterback Kurt Benkert cost the Cavaliers (2-7, 1-4 ACC) after they had scored 14 unanswered points to take a 20-17 lead in the third quarter. Virginia dropped its fourth-straight ACC contest, falling 27-20 to Wake Forest.

Realizing his dream of playing on Sundays is closer than ever for junior linebacker Micah Kiser, as NFL scouts have taken notice of his anticipation, work ethic and physicality this season — especially last Saturday in Virginia’s losing effort against No. 5 Louisville.

Don’t let recent history fool you into thinking the Virginia football team is going to give No. 5 Louisville a 60-minute battle Saturday.
(10/24/16 12:39am)
Junior linebacker Micah Kiser pried the football from North Carolina near midfield, giving junior quarterback Kurt Benkert and his Virginia offense a chance to level the score at 14 with 13:34 left in the third, but the Cavaliers (2-5, 1-2 ACC) faltered on another third down and saw the game get away from them.

Removed at least in time from that gut-wrenching 68-62 loss to Syracuse in last season’s Elite Eight and the departure of his four senior leaders — Malcolm Brogdon, Anthony Gill, Mike Tobey and Evan Nolte — whose collective contribution to the Virginia basketball program goes without saying, Coach Tony Bennett addressed the media Monday afternoon in advance of the 2016-17 season.
(10/17/16 3:04am)
When it appeared the opening drive of Virginia’s homecomings game against Pittsburgh would end in a punt, back-to-back Panthers penalties brought junior quarterback Kurt Benkert and his Cavalier offense back out on the field for a chance to convert on fourth and one.

Nearly two weeks ago, the man sitting to the left of me all afternoon was an “Iron Duke” — one of the many Blue Devil alumni and well-off bandwagoners who join the club to help fund Duke Athletics and to receive priority seating for football and basketball games each season.

Prevalent turnovers and poor timing between junior quarterback Kurt Benkert and his receiving corps, plus a lack of cohesion on the front lines, led in part to Virginia’s 0-3 start to the season.
(09/26/16 3:17am)
Junior quarterback Kurt Benkert entered Saturday’s game against Central Michigan with so-so numbers. The transfer from East Carolina had tossed a total of five touchdowns to four interceptions — the most among ACC quarterbacks — and averaged roughly 232 yards passing per game.

Most Virginia football fans are well aware of junior defensive end Andrew Brown’s backstory. They’re probably tired of hearing about how Brown dominated on the high school gridiron, recording 18 sacks and nine forced fumbles his senior year at Oscar Smith High School, which earned him the No. 5 overall ranking in ESPN Recruiting’s Class of 2014. In their minds, Brown hasn’t met his great expectations after two seasons at Virginia. They can’t stand reminders of what could have been.

Instead of taking a shot in the end zone on third and goal from the five-yard line, junior quarterback Kurt Benkert surveyed the left side before tucking the football and running. Connecticut junior linebacker Junior Joseph brought down Benkert by his legs at the two-yard line, causing a mad Cavalier scramble to kick the game-tying field goal with no timeouts remaining and only 17 seconds left on a ticking clock.

For those Virginia football fans watching ESPN bleary-eyed on the east coast late last Saturday night, the Oregon game probably didn’t stir up many semblances of hope. The Ducks racked up an absurd amount of yardage both on the ground and through the air, finishing with enough in both phases — 301 rushing and 332 passing — to outdrive most PGA Tour professionals. Flashy Oregon coasted to a 44-26 victory.

Five minutes into the fourth quarter Saturday, I found myself devouring another serving of those marshmallow fudge brownies in the press box to cope with a wide range of negative emotions.

Virginia football fans have long awaited the first Saturday in September, and rightly so, as head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s new, streamlined product will finally be on full display against Richmond in his team’s opener at Scott Stadium.
