Hundreds of children dressed in Halloween costumes gathered on the Lawn Wednesday evening with their families for the annual Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn — a University tradition that attracts members of the Charlottesville community, faculty, students and alumni with dozens of University groups volunteering to hand out candy.

The University announced a $25 million gift from The Chris and Carrie Shumway Foundation last week to fund a new building and new bioscience/business program at the McIntire School of Commerce. A portion of the donation will be matched with $3.5 million from the University’s Strategic Investment Fund, which is a part of the University’s endowment used to fund prioritized initiatives.

Khizr Khan — father of late U.S. Army Capt. and U.Va. alumnus Humayun Khan — addressed the University Democrats last Wednesday in Wilson Hall. Khan’s speech focused on the role of the individual in establishing civil discourse within the community.

A discrimination lawsuit filed by a former University administrator was dismissed in federal court Aug. 24, indicating the matter was resolved and that the complaint cannot be brought back.

Molly Schwartzburg, a curator for the Albert & Shirley Small Special Collections Library, and Michael Mason, assistant dean in the Office of African-American Affairs, delivered a talk Tuesday in the Rotunda on the exclusion and subsequent inclusion of a burned Ku Klux Klan cross in a Special Collections exhibit.

Brown College recently passed a $1,800 budget proposal for a Renaissance Fair April 14 on Monroe Hill. Due to low enrollment in the Medieval Studies major, the fair aims to increase student interest in medievalism and the related program offered at the University. The fair will be free for attendees and feature local performances from the Virginia Renaissance Faire, a photo booth and a Medieval costume contest. Booths will also be set up and run by professors that represent the different courses offered in the Medieval Studies Program.

Rachel Wahl — an assistant professor in the Curry School of Education — delivered a public lecture Tuesday in Bavaro Hall on combining public education and open dialogue into public forums to improve the relationship between law enforcement personnel and community members. The event was hosted by The Center for Race and Public Education in the South as a part of the Race and Education Lecture Series.
