For all of Virginia’s problems on the football field in recent years, it has never lacked talent at the top of the roster. In coach Mike London’s last five recruiting classes, according to Rivals, there were three five-star and 15 four-star recruits. This talent has translated to the National Football League as well, with Virginia boasting a 33-year streak of teams selecting players in the NFL draft.

By most standards, Virginia’s performance on the basketball court this season has been exceptional. They have the best defense in the country as measured by points allowed per game, a respectable ranking of sixteenth in the nation in the AP poll, and a resume that includes a road win over a then top-ten team in Louisville.

When coach Bronco Mendenhall arrived in Charlottesville, his goal was to create a consistent winner. One year into his tenure, with a record of 2-10, his goal does not seem to be any closer to fulfillment than it was at the start.

The first column I wrote this season was about the need for a consistent option at quarterback. Former coach Mike London was notorious for his inability to find an effective signal caller, but with coach Bronco Mendenhall and junior quarterback Kurt Benkert, I found reason for hope. Mendenhall’s teams at BYU always featured stability at quarterback, and in selecting an underclassman, I thought he could provide Virginia with some of this same permanence.

When the AP preseason college basketball rankings came out a week ago, Virginia was ranked eighth. This is a comfortable place for the Cavaliers, who have been ranked in the bottom half of the top 10 during the preseason for three straight years now. You’d have to go back to 2012 to find a year in which Virginia wasn’t ranked to begin the season.

Saturday’s game against Louisville was everything I want in a game. On the crisp, beautiful fall day, the Cavaliers challenged one of the best teams in the country from kickoff until the final down, whipping up a lethargic fan base into a frenzy, creating an emotional roller coaster that unfortunately ended in heartbreak for Virginia fans. As strange as it is to say about a loss, the Louisville game is exactly what coach Bronco Mendenhall should shoot for going forward. No coach can control the final outcome, but in almost every aspect, the Cavaliers did what fans had long been hoping they would do.

When coach Bronco Mendenhall was hired at the end of last season, no one was under any illusions that the program was ready for takeoff. Virginia was coming off four straight losing seasons and hadn’t won a road game since 2012.

Virginia‘s success in sports as of late has been well noted. The Cavaliers won the Capital One Cup for best men’s sports teams for the 2014-2015 season, and have averaged sixth in the Directors Cup over the past three years, a nationwide ranking of all a university’s sports teams. The accomplishments of teams like baseball and basketball have been covered substantially, but the contributions of the men’s soccer team have flown under the radar.

Under former coach Mike London, Virginia’s offense seemed stuck in the mud. The offense was slow, as in 2014, they ranked 83rd in the country in pace, measured in seconds per play. They weren’t overly effective either, as they were 80th in yards per game, and 92nd in points per game. Their style was vanilla — heavy on runs up the middle, with big blockers and big backs.

Coming into Saturday’s game against Duke, you would be hard-pressed to feel optimistic about the state of Virginia’s secondary. Having already lost senior cornerback Tim Harris for the season, Thursday’s injury report piled on — adding sophomore starting cornerback Myles Robinson and his classmate Darious Latimore to the ranks of the unavailable. The group wasn’t one that could afford injuries to begin with, having given up 306 passing yards per game, along with a robust 9.1 yards per pass, while only picking up only two interceptions.

Upon the start of the 2015 postseason, the Virginia baseball team was coming off one of its most lackluster seasons in recent memory, finishing with the worst record of their previous seven seasons. The team had been ravaged by injuries and was relying on unproven freshmen to carry significant weight.

For the fifth straight year, Virginia will come out of non-conference play without a winning record. While this isn’t surprising for a team that hasn’t made a bowl game in that span, it has spurred conversation that the Cavaliers ought to schedule easier teams this season for the portion of their schedule they control.

Watching the Cavaliers take on Oregon last Saturday night, the difference in teams was apparent. Whether watching top running back Royce Freeman dance around Virginia defenders, or Olympic hurdler Devon Allen mimic his track triumphs in an end-zone celebration, Cavalier fans could see Oregon’s notorious athleticism clear as day.

The University is peppered with world-class athletes, from multi-time national champions to Olympic gold medal winners. In all the sporting events I’ve attended here, however, maybe the most raucous atmosphere I’ve seen outside of John Paul Jones Arena is at a club hockey game.

As the confetti rained down on Levi’s Stadium and a battered, beaten and turf-stained Cam Newton walked off the field, the world of modern football received a powerful message from the 2016 Super Bowl champion Broncos — the road to success is paved by defense.

There were numerous hallmarks of Virginia football under coach Mike London, both positive and negative. Ranging from a stellar in-state recruiting presence to a penchant for losing close games and a startlingly high number of penalties for too many men on the field, London’s teams had a lot that stood out.

The Virginia baseball team travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass. this Friday to take on Boston College in the attempt to get back to a winning record in conference play.
