It’s a leap year. That means that this summer the quadrennial Summer Olympic Games were supposed to be held — this year, it was set to take place in Tokyo. During the event’s roughly two-week period, Japan would have attracted attention from all around the world, becoming a global center of communal exhilaration and cultural exchange. As an international student from Japan, there is nothing more exciting than an event like this.

I grew up in Japan, surrounded by many enthusiastic fans of Asian idol groups. Whether at school, home or a friends’ house, everyone would be talking about K-pop idols and broadcasting their music. They were everywhere. Although I enjoy idol pop music to this day, I personally never went on to fervently follow these idols like some people around me did. Instead, I simply accepted their presence as a part of what constitutes my native culture.

More than 50 students made their way to the Newcomb Ballroom Sunday evening to enjoy the annual Fall Festival hosted by the Japan Club. Japan Club is a student organization committed to promoting Japanese culture by holding many culture-based events throughout the year, such as Spring Matsuri and Ramen Night. Third-year Engineering student and Japan Club secretary Victor Yang gave an overview of Fall Festival.

In many ways, high school graduation was a key moment in my life. As an international student, finally receiving a diploma from an American high school gave me a sense of accomplishment I hadn’t felt since I began my studies in the States in ninth grade. My graduation was also the first time my family visited the school I attended. Both of my parents, my paternal grandfather and my maternal grandmother flew all the way from Japan to celebrate my graduation. However, this opportunity carried a particularly special meaning for my grandmother. To tell you why, let me take you back 70 years.

When I tell people that I attended boarding school for seven years, they often react with pity because I’ve spent so little time with my parents growing up.

For every first-year student, the first few weeks of the school year are full of meeting new people — and my experience was no exception. I met countless people in my dorm, in class and in club interest meetings. At the University, I’ve found that students tend to “break the ice” by bringing up school-related topics first. “How are you liking your time here?” and questions about majors and living situation are asked more often than questions like, “Where are you from?”
