With all the fuss surrounding the talented Cavalier newcomers -- including a scintillating pure point guard from the Bronx -- incumbent floor general Donald Hand was almost lost in the shuffle. Now more than halfway through the season, Hand remains the heart and soul of the Virginia basketball team.

Now that he's firmly ensconced as the grand poobah of the Washington Wizards, Michael Jordan won't be returning to the NBA anytime soon. But it looks like Dennis Rodman will be coming out of retirement to invigorate the Dallas Mavericks, one of pro basketball's saddest franchises. Other than His Airness taking the reins in the nation's capital, the return of The Worm could be the best thing to hit the sagging league since the slam dunk.

Having survived the longest three-tenths of a second in college basketball history and handing an 87-85 defeat to a sinking North Carolina squad Tuesday night, it was time to celebrate for the Cavalier men. The season was little more than half over and much work remained to be done, but they knew they had just captured the biggest win in the year and a half since Pete Gillen arrived in Charlottesville.

Through the dying years of the Jeff Jones era and the first season of Pete Gillen's regime, the Virginia student body did not get many chances to storm the court. They thought they had an opportunity when North Carolina visited University Hall last year, but Ademola Okulaja broke many an orange and blue heart with his game-winning three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left.

Pete Rose was on TV again the other night. He just won't shut up.

As Minnesota skyscraper Joel Przybilla made painfully clear Tuesday night, the Virginia men's basketball team still is looking for size in the paint. The Cavaliers don't have a top-level seven-footer to bang with the likes of Przybilla, but the big man revolution is well underway in Charlottesville, thanks to first-year power forward Travis Watson.

The maddening thing about soccer is that a game - or a season - can be lost with one slip-up. The Virginia women had that axiom driven home painfully Saturday, as they scratched and clawed with Hartford into a third overtime period before bowing out of the NCAA Tournament in the third round with a 3-2 loss at Klöckner Stadium.

Thomas Jones cranked out another Heisman-worthy performance Saturday, but beleaguered quarterback Dan Ellis stole quite a bit of his thunder with a record-breaking passing day as the Cavaliers rolled to a 50-21 win against winless Buffalo in the home finale.

At this point last week, the Virginia women's soccer team had lost four of its last five games and was still recovering from a heart-wrenching loss to Clemson in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Now the Cavaliers are skating into the third round of the NCAA Tourney after an impressive 3-1 victory over James Madison yesterday at Klöckner Stadium.

Angela Hucles has a penchant for auspicious debuts each time she moves up a level in the soccer world. She made her debut on the high school varsity team as a seventh grader. Six years later, she capped a record-setting collegiate rookie year by earning a spot on the All-ACC First Team. The next step for the Virginia fourth-year forward is to make that kind of immediate impact on the U.S. National Team.

Last night's exhibition contest was a bit like a pickup game at the YMCA for the Virginia men's basketball team. The Cavaliers played a bunch of 30-year-olds that kept it close for a while with good old-fashioned hustle and fundamentally sound play. But talent and athleticism kicked in for the Cavs in the second half and they closed the preseason with a 94-70 win against the Nantucket Nectars Naturals at University Hall.

You may spend Sunday afternoon sleeping until three. You may spend it parked in front of the NFL on CBS or nursing the previous night's hangover. But four Virginia women's soccer players will spend Sunday afternoon attempting to fend off the end of their prolific Cavalier careers.
